Pledge Update: A Message from Producer, Pat Collier

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Studio day 10: A message from the producer, Pat Collier.
Morning all! Yesterday we finished the recording part of Ziezo at Perry Vale Studios in London and we’re all super excited about it! There’s still a long long way to go yet, we still need to mix and master the album and put it into production and get it all shipped out of course, but we’re over a major hurdle in our 26 album mission. Huge thanks go out to all who pledged to join us in the studio, we had a ball with you guys and getting you up to do backing vocals, tambourines and various other things was an amazing experience for us. So here’s a little message from our producer and original member of the Vibrators Pat Collier. Cheers!"

Charlie plays harmonica on new Riots LP

Norwegian punk band Riots, who feature uksubs.co.uk website editor Paul Mileman on drums, have a new CD out via Randale Records from Germany (RAN 226) on 15 December called 'It Will Never Change'.
Charlie Harper features on the track entitled 'Drunk and Dumb', having actually recorded his harmonica part in the bathroom at the Kanal Rock Festival in Norway back in August 2015 with Paul. The vinyl LP is scheduled for release in March 2016 - apparently there is a back up at every pressing plant due to the resurgence of vinyl - but pre-orders will be up soon at www.randaleshop.de with 100 copies being on red vinyl and 500 on black.
The album will also be available as a download, and you can check out further info on Riots at:

Online photo review of recent Subs gig in London

Louder Than War website has published a photo review of the U.K. Subs recent gig at the 02 Academy Islington, London on December 11th 2015.
The photos are by Svenja Block.
"Louder Than War photographer Svenja Block takes photos of the U.K Subs and support band The Ramonas at 02 Academy in London.
A most excellent night out on a Friday night in London. The venue was filled with punk rockers despite the festive season being in full swing. The only support band of the evening The Ramonas rocked hard – if there is such a title as best tribute act – then this band deserves the aforementioned accolade like no other! Frontwoman Cloey Ramona’s (no, everyone’s) performance was one hundred per cent physical and simply stunning.
Original 1977 Punk legends UK Subs need little introduction; their 40th anniversary is just around the corner and album number 26, “Ziezo”, which is said to be their last one ever, is currently funded via a successful Pledge Music online campaign.
Charlie Harper commands the stage and has everything under control, while sporting a mischievous smile on his face in between songs. This is an intriguing line-up with Jet shredding his guitar, Alvin Gibbs on bass, and Jamie Oliver on drums.
Tonight we hear classics and more recent stuff: “Party In Paris”, “Hell Is Other People”, “Disease”, “Emotional Blackmail”, “Stranglehold” and a timely cover version of Kevin Bloody Wilson’s “Hey Santa Claus”.
Great stuff!"

Pledge update: Question and answer #4

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
"Question and answer #4
We’re sending this update from Islington O2 Academy where we’re playing in about 45 minutes. This question is from Kevin Yeomans who asks:
“Dear Charlie, a few songs feature your trusty harmonica and really enhance the atmosphere, stamping your signature on a tune. are there plans for it to feature on “Z” ? Also are there any interesting stories relating to the harmonica over the years. I’ve even ran back to Yuko to get it for you, during at a gig in Lydney a few years back."
Thanks for the question Kevin, and as always, if anyone has any others, post your questions in the comments and we’ll answer any good ones we receive!"

Alvin discusses his forthcoming 'Ziezo' mini book

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
"Alvin Gibbs talks about the 'making of Ziezo' mini book
Some of you may already own a copy of Alvin Gibbs’ book detailing his time as Iggy Pop’s bass player, Neighbourhood Threat; or have followed his literary memoirs series on the uksubstimeandmatter website. As an exclusive creation for PledgeMusic the UK Subs’ bassist will be providing an entertaining mini-book detailing the making of the Ziezo album.
Supported by applicable photographs, lyric and chord sheets, it will offer the reader a unique diary-form insight into the day-to-day creative process in the studio, the mechanics of how each song was musically and lyrically developed, the difficulties of recording while simultaneously touring the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, and some choice anecdotes from his thirty-six year tenure with the band.
Every book will be numbered and hand-signed by each member of the UK Subs. Here then is your chance to acquire a historical literary and pictorial document of the making the final Subs’ album which will not be available for procurement via any other customary outlets."

“Hello Alvin.question for you mate.when recording your bass parts,do you go in with a finished bassline or do you wing it a bit more on the lead style bass runs .on yellow leader it came across as the latter.which personally im all in favour of.i like what comes out of the “just go for it” school of fret mastery..also as you play the bass the proper way, round your knees.do you record like this or sitting in comfort.cheers si"..."

Each release comes with a full colour heavy-duty card gatefold sleeve, boasting previously unpublished photos of the band by Virginia Turbett, as well as exclusive comprehensive liner note essays from the U.K. Subs 'Time & Matter' website editors Mark Chadderton and Rob Cook, the first of which is by the former, entitled 'Background: Recorded 77-78'.

Volume 2 is set to be released in December with the final Volume 3 scheduled for a January 2016 release date as yet to be confirmed.

 Charlie's new side project band

 SHITEHAWK start recording

After a weekend which saw him play a live acoustic set with Knox as The Urban Dogs as well as launch the incredibly exciting U.K. Subs final album Pledge Music campaign, the indefatigable Charlie Harper has now gathered together yet another side project band.
Called SHITEHAWK, they went into Pat Collier's Perry Vale Studio to record a couple of tracks, to be released as a Time & Matter Records 7" early next year, of which, one of the tracks recorded was 'Stop Hobophobia'...
This inaugural recording session for Shitehawk consisted of Charlie, with ex-Sub Darrell Bath on guitar, ex-Sub Pete Davies on drums as well as Phil McDermott from the Straps filling in on bass. Phil told T&M that "...it was a superb experience, in fact it was an honour - three punk greats.... and me!"
This new venture will be an occasional band, who will tour next year as well as hopefully record an LP. Ex-Subs bassist Paul Slack completes the line-up as follows, but as indicated above, he couldn't make the session...
SHITEHAWK
Charlie Harper - vocals
Darrell Bath - guitar
Paul Slack - bass
Pete Davies - drums
This fabulous new band are obviously all ex-Subs, with the Slack/Davies rhythm section being arguably its most famous, having recorded the Subs' most successful material from 1978 to 1980. The Time & Matter website will bring you all the latest updates on Shitehawk, so stay tuned folks...

Officially endorsed by Charlie Harper himself, the U.K. Subs are now a part of a fantastic new working class t-shirt project!

These t-shirts are being produced by a self-organised workers co-operative in Croatia. The income generated from their sales will be shared between the participating bands, as well as supporting workers in South Asia in their fight for higher wages and better working conditions.

These special and limited U.K. Subs t-shirts will be available from 3 November 2015 until 3 January 2016.  Utilising the classic U.K. Subs round logo over the lyrics to 'Warhead', please take time to have a look at this great cause via their crowdfunding website at www.startnext.com/en/dnamerch.

There's a short video explaining the project, as well as various sections of information concerning all you need to know to get behind this inspiring project both on the website as well as the dna merch Facebook page, which you can 'like' at: https://www.facebook.com/dnamerch/

dna merch is the creation of two longstanding friends Doreen Zelmer and Anton Wundrak, from Berlin. Anton is involved in trade union activism and plays the drums in the ska and punk band Arthur & the Spooners. Doreen is engaged in environmental youth education.

EXCLUSIVE T&M INTERVIEW - RICKY MCGUIRE

The U.K. Subs official website 'Time & Matter' today proudly presents a brand new in-depth 'exclusive' interview with ex-Subs bassist Ricky McGuire.

Ricky is perhaps better known to U.K. Subs fans as 'Plonker Magoo', the nickname given to him for the Subs albums he appeared on, namely 1985s 'Huntington Beach' and the following year's double 'live' album 'In Action'.
Ricky also plays on the 7" EP 'Live In Holland', which in turn was taken from the semi-official 'Left For Dead' album.
T&M editor Mark Chadderton chatted to Ricky about his time in the Subs as well as his other musical experiences, including a stint in Charlie's side-project band the Urban Dogs. Ricky also chats about his early years getting into punk and about being a member of punk bands such as Chaotic Youth and The Fits, as well as being a member of the legendary folk-punk band The Men They Couldn't Hang since 1986, who recently released their critically acclaimed 'Pledge Music' campaign album 'The Defiant'.
The interview includes many photos from Ricky's own personal archive, including previously unpublished U.K. Subs photos...

Time & Matter Records Proudly Present

 T&M 018 - U.K. Subs - Amoeba Sounds E.P.

  • 4 SONG 7” SINGLE E.P. OF SCARCE 1996 SUBS TRACKS
  • FIRST TIME EVER AVAILABLE ON VINYL
  • BEER COLOURED VINYL
  • LIMITED TO 250 HAND NUMBERED COPIES
  • 4 PAGE FULL COLOUR INSERT:
  • EXCLUSIVE NEW LINER NOTES FROM THE THEN DRUMMER BENJIE BUTLER
  • NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED IN STUDIO PHOTOS
  • LYRIC SHEET – FULLY CORRECTED FROM ORIGINAL RELEASE

It's finally here! T&M 018, slightly out of sync - we've had 019 and 020 out already - but that's not important! What IS important is that this fantastic four track release from the U.K. Subs archive - dating back to 1996 - boasts tracks that have never before been put out on vinyl.
Previously only available on 'The British PUNKINVASION Vol.2' compilation CD, these four tracks of raucous, rabble-rousing punk rock were blasted out by a short lived line-up on the cusp of the band's late 90s revival.
This new release thankfully gives these four rough diamonds a long overdue stand alone release.
Two - then - completely new infectious Subs-songs, 'B.F.D.' and 'Government Drugs', are complemented by a full throttle romp through the Wat Tyler classic, 'Hops N Barley', as well as an embryonic version of what would become a new Subs-standard, 'Riot'. All recorded in a week at a New Cross Road studio in deepest, darkest London, SE14.
What more could a Subs vinyl junkie wish for?
Strictly limited to 250 hand numbered copies on 7" beer coloured vinyl in a full colour sleeve with four page colour insert featuring previously un-published photographs courtesy of Benji Bollox (Butler), who played drums on all four tracks and co-wrote 'Riot' with Charlie; Benji has also kindly provided T&M with some brand new liner notes. Additionally, a full set of lyrics are published for the first time, correcting the errors and omissions from the original CD compilation's booklet. Originally recorded for the German record label Amöbenklang in 1996, "Amöbenklang" roughly translates from German to English as ‘Amoeba Sounds’, thus giving this release its microbiologically inspired title. The 7" single's striking artwork utilises an image on its front cover of a record's vinyl grooves taken through an electron microscope magnified x 142 by a student at the University of Rochester, New York, whilst the back cover features, for contrast, an enlarged vinyl image familiar to Subs fans.

U.K. SUBS - AMOEBA SOUNDS E.P.
Side 1: RIOT (Harper/Butler) / GOVERNMENT DRUGS (Harper/Hendrick)
Side 2: B.F.D. (Harper) / HOPS ‘N’ BARLEY (Stubbs, arr. Harper)
U.K. Subs line-up on these recordings:
Vocals: Charlie Harper / Guitar: Phil Pain / Bass: Ozzy / Drums: Benji Bollox

 NEW JAMIE OLIVER INTERVIEW

The 13th Floor website has just published a fantastic interview with U.K. Subs drummer Jamie Oliver, primarily covering his additional role as the drummer for SNFU.
However, this excellent interview also covers Subs stuff as well as interesting insights into Jamie's many other drumming duties for other bands...
The interview is by Tim Edwards, who runs Punk Rock Road Trips, supporting the live scene in New Zealand...
"...the Subs are more blues based whereas SNFU are a lot faster with more of a metal vibe going on in places. They’re somewhat different personally too though – the Subs are kinda reserved, they like their comforts like hotels, nice wines, smelly cheeses and all that shit, whereas SNFU consist of a blind nudist, a deaf alcoholic, a one legged former crack addict and a toothless Chinese faggot (his words, not mine). I think the only fucked up thing about me is that I’m English..."
You can read the full interview with Jamie on the following link...

 JEZ KEEFE (8 JANUARY 1964 - 28 JULY 2015)

It is with great sadness that Time & Matter report the passing of the photographer Jez Keefe.
Jez was well known on the UK gig circuit photographing acts as diverse as The Jim Jones Revue, Wilko Johnson, Slaves and a host of punk legends including Spear of Destiny, The Vibrators, Vice Squad, The Damned and of course the U.K. Subs.
Visitors to the Time & Matter website will be very familiar with Jez’s distinctive work as the site is littered with examples of his photographic skills. Always gracious, Jez was more than happy for us to use any of his pictures of the band and didn’t hesitate when we asked to use a selection for our 2012 calendar raising money for the RNLI. Jez’s photographs also made it in to more of the physical medium, with some of his work being published in the likes of Vive Le Rock magazine, the cover of Spear of Destiny’s album 31 and Subs fans will also know his work from its use in the CD booklet for XXIV.
His sudden death at the age of 51 has left everyone who knew him stunned and has prompted tributes from band members and friends alike.
His funeral will take place at Grimsby Crematorium on 10 August at 13:40, with a wake and celebration of his life at The Kings Royal Hotel in Cleethorpes to which all are welcome, there is also an event page on Facebook here.
Mark and Rob would like to extend their condolences to Jez’s family and friends at what must be an incredibly difficult time.

CHARGE 69 - New Album Featuring Charlie Harper
FANTASTIC INTERVIEW IN THE PUNKED ONLINE 'ZINE

The latest online edition of the wonderful 'Punked' fanzine includes a fascinating interview with Charge 69s' Caps concerning the new album 'Much More Than Music' which features Charlie Harper on vocals amongst other punk luminaries.

"Maybe the singer who influenced me the most is Charlie Harper as I bought ‘Another Kind Of Blues’ in ‘79 or early ‘80. I have met him so many times since ‘82/’83 and had the honour to play quite a lot with the UK Subs. But all of the other vocalists have a very big place in my life and in my culture too. Punk changed my life and gave me the opportunity to make it exciting for more than three decades now. What more could I say but, THANK YOU!.."

TIME & MATTER RECORDS NEW PRODUCT!

T&M 019 RELEASE DATE: Limited Edition Designer T-shirt

The U.K. Subs specialist record label Time & Matter Recordings issued the first in a planned series of collectible designer t-shirts on Friday 24 April 2015.

Strictly limited to 77, a number specially chosen for this merchandise to commemorate the year the Subs formed - 1977 -  this first beautifully designed 100% cotton, black t-shirt features the Time & Matter Records' striking logo across the chest, with the three main T&M artists listed around that logo - U.K. Subs - Charlie Harper - Urban Dogs.

The T&M logo is the one used on all the vinyl issued by Time & Matter Records, with the 'stylus arm' listing this item's catalogue number - T&M 019 - and the website address www.uksubstimeandmatter.net.

The main 'T&M' writing is in light green, which Subs fans will know was originally designed for T&M as a pastiche of the old GEM Records' logo, for whom the Subs had their greatest success, circa 1979-81.

Each designer t-shirt comes with a double sided rounded edge thick collectors' card, individually hand numbered and hole-punched. These are attached to the t-shirt info material-label via blue (...of course!) coloured ribbon and a light (lime) green safety pin! (...of course!!!)

These highly collectible stylish garments really are THE essential sartorial Subs item for this summer...

ANOTHER AMAZING REVIEW OF 'YELLOW LEADER'

This time it's Kevin McGowan who absolutely loves the new Subs album, with his stunning appraisal of 'Yellow Leader' on 'The Revue' website:
"This version of the band has been playing together consistently for a decade, and the relationship makes all the difference. Charlie has been there since 1976. Alvin Gibbs was an original Sub, but took a few extended breaks over the years. Jet is the best guitarist they’ve ever had, and Jamie Oliver is an extraordinary skin-pounder. This band is road tested, and the production on this album is slick without being too glossy.
Yellow Leader is strong, tough, melodic, and shows a tremendous amount of growth. It still snarls and kicks like any great punk album, but they show a dynamism in playing that lacked on their earliest efforts. Check “Bordeaux Red” for a nice melodic shift, a little more down-tempo. But tracks like “Suicidal Girl” or album opener “Velveteen” tear you apart with their tough attack..."

JET'S CAT 'FATSO' GETS HIS OWN MERCHANDISE

FANTASTIC REVIEW FOR URBAN DOGS 7" ON FUNGALPUNK

The fabulous FungalPunk website has reviewed the new Urban Dogs 7" single...
Read another fab review for the latest Time & Matter Records' release on the link below...

"''Rebellion Song' is a golden oldie, here draped in concentrated artistry loaded with textured emotion and heartfelt questioning that deals with political, warmongering idiocy and kickback beliefs that need to shake up many stances and create new liberated dances - no easy task.
'One Foot In The Grave' (is) a restless song sticking posers into many political pots, a pot pourii of pondering with much disillusion and disgust foamed from a belly obviously on fire.
The weft of the rhythm is colourful and effective despite tones that could be initially deemed as subdued with intricacies that could easily be passed by.  Take time dear onlooker with this, a steady creeping vine of vibration that has a incessant growth pattern is to be revealed.
...get yer Speedo’s on and dash for the din - not a bad do at all.."

'Yellow Leader' - great review on 'Art of the State Blog'

There is another fantastic review of 'Yellow Leader' that's just been posted online - this time from Artofthestate.co.uk:

"There's so much great stuff here if the Subs were a lazier band they could quite easily have chucked another half dozen songs into the recording can and released two separate 12 track albums to complete the A-Z right here, right now in 2015. Yellow Leader defies this attitude, it’s a fantastic album by a band on the top of their game. Roll on letter Z!"

TONIGHT'S U.K. SUBS GIG IN MILAN CANCELLED

The following is a statement from Jamie concerning tonight's show in Milan being cancelled...

"Regrettably, we have to announce that tonight's show in Milan was cancelled due to a bad weather forecast. Not content with the reasoning behind the cancellation we went to the Lo Fi Club to attempt to rescue the show and in the case that it wasn't possible we wanted to apologise personally to any of our fans who went there only to discover the bad news. It has to be clear that in no way was the cancellation the decision of the U.K. Subs nor TV Smith; we arrived into Milan on time and wanted to play the show. But we feel it is our duty to offer our sincerest apologies to those who had made plans on our account. We hope to return next year. There have been no issues of doubt regarding any subsequent shows..."

'MONSTER' REVIEW FOR URBAN DOGS 7" SINGLE

Dom Daley loves the new Urban Dogs 7" single...
Read his splendid review of the latest Time & Matter Records release on the Uber Rock Singles Club February 2015 webpage on the link below...

"'Rebellion Song’ is a monster of a song. Whilst it’s mid pace this Harper number is immense and a really accomplished song. 'One Foot In The Grave' on the other hand sees Knox step up to the mic for another must own Time & Matter release..."

SINGLES: A sadly unloved format by many new kids on the block but we can't get enough of 'em especially when they come pressed up on multi-coloured vinyl. Singles are the lifeblood of rock and roll always have been and always will be. It’s the perfect way to discover new music (not fucking downloads)...
