   PART 6 - 'DEAR HENRY'

   by Nicky Garratt

The Bocci's Celler in Santa Cruz was a last minute booking as the original venue had double booked.

Expectation was low, but although it was thin on the ground there were people there who were curious about the band. Equipment troubles delayed our set and with an 11 o'clock curfew we cut Somewhen Veaa (Dreamstate) and (On the Ground) Safe and Sound from the set. At the end of the night people were dancing; to a prog band!

In the morning Saint James & the Apostles, (who stayed at my house), and I ate breakfast in the garden. We had time to restock the merchandise and sort out equipment as tonight is the last show with them.

The Knockout is on Mission Street. Parking? What parking?

We took the Hedersmobile down an hour early just to get a spot near the club. We got one block away then waited until a car moved from directly in front of the club's entrance.

From the start the atmosphere in and outside the club was great. We had flyered the Magma show at Slims a couple of weeks earlier and saw some faces from that show.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a huge Magma fan and that show made a lot of San Francisco prog bands in attendance re-evaluate their music. I digress though.

The venue filled out nicely and Inner Ear Brigade, the opening band, really set the bar high. They reminded me of Italy's Piccio Del Pozzo.

After the show St. James & The Apostles and Hedersleben posed in front of the bus for an end of tour, (for them), photo.

Today is a long drive to the Til Two club in San Diego. St. James left at the same time but to sightsee in San Francisco before their flight. Now we are but six in the bus, talk about a luxury of space. Sometimes running late is horrible. The loading through the crowd, no sound-check thing is appalling.

This particular evening we battled the LA traffic to get in under the load-in deadline only to find we were just about the first people there. The openers were Deep Sea Thunder Beast, a Vegan 3 piece heavy doom band and Hazzard's Cure a four piece Doom band who we'd played with before.

The show went well.

Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye and I have done the thousand mile circle around each other for decades. I first met Henry in Leeds circa 1980, most likely Ian and Henry, (plus various members of Bad Brains), were at a Subs show at Washington D.C.'s 9:30 club around this time too.

Other meetings, not more than once a decade, were the fantastic Rollins Band show in New York when I dropped in, and playing table tennis with Ian at Maximum Rock 'N' Roll in San Francisco in the 1990s.

They each, in their own way, grew from the punk beginnings into open minded artists without compromising their values. (Check out Ian MacKaye's Fugazi and Henry's highly recommended and hilarious rant on Iggy Pop).

During the second half of this tour people who had heard us on Henry's show turned up to see us live and Henry got us a nice mention in the LA Weekly (see image right). Although we've maintained a sporadic email dialog, I'm very much looking forward to talking to him tonight face to face.

The Los Globos show is early, but we had time to go to the beach for an hour before braving the traffic again. (See picture left - click to enlarge)

The club is nice with a generous sized stage. We are playing upstairs. Henry showed up in a white jacket and we immediately started catching up.

As the opening bands played it was clear that the show would not be packed.

Still, we played through the set unperturbed and Henry was most encouraging in his comments.

The show was smooth and afterwards we went to a restaurant with him to talk some (see right) more before driving to an industrial warehouse/workspace where we parked the bus behind locked gates.

NICKY GARRATT TALKS EXCLUSIVELY TO T&M

"This is the only time I've ever explained the meaning of these songs!

I envisioned the first 3 Hedersleben LPs from the band’s inception.
It's Time and Matter - or strictly Time and Space - in a sense.
The first album 'Upgoer' is about humanities ultimate goal of going up.

Upgoer (part one)
We look up! You will hear the sounds of Earth and at the end the voice is a recording of the last speaker of a dead language.
Der Donnervogel (Dreamstate)
Up we go and we pass, allegorically, through the mythical Thunderbird constellation.
Dark Nebula
Thoughts during the journey. (Words by K. Bean).
Upgoer (Part 2)
The expansive galaxy engulfs the ship as do the possibilities.
The End of Love. (Dreamstate)
The crew emerge from the cryogenic machines. To them they have just said their goodbyes to lovers, friends and families who have, by now been dead for thousands of years.

The second, new album, 'Die Neuen Welten' continues our saga as we celebrate the new worlds discovered by the Kepler space telescope. Now these planets await.

Zu Den Neuen Welten
To the new worlds.
(On The Ground) Safe and Sound
The unmanned probe lands.
Nomad World (Dreamstate)
We know planets can be ejected from star systems to drift darkly through interstellar space. It has been postulated that they might be more numerous than stellar bound worlds. These orphans mimic humanity itself until we can show we are not alone.
XO5B
One of Space telescope Kepler's triumphs.
Tiny Flowers/Little Moon
…and life goes on. Little Moon is our keyboard player Kephera's world - you'll need a passport.

The third album 'Fall Of Chronopolis' is about that unsettling dimension that robs us of everything: Time. It is based on the glorious book of the same name by Barrington J.Bayley.

It is due to be recorded next year..."

HEDERSLEBEN FILM RELEASED IN AUGUST 2014

Hedersleben released a 17 minute film/video version of Zu Den Neuen Welten back in August 2014. It was shot and directed by Erren Franklin, and at the end of the piece, there is a little footage of what Nicky described to T&M as "Hedersleben goofing around..."
