"UK SUBS - ZIEZO
Well the time has come to review the UK Subs CD that completes a long and hard-worked journey that has seen considerable highs, potentially crippling lows and a fine attitude of get up and do it despite the situation. I own every CD, most of which were brought on the release day, I have given them many spins over the years and as far as I am concerned this lot are my favourite band bar none. Many hits, a percentage of shits and some offerings that miss the mark completely but boy what a grand trip it has been. The crest the band ride on now is well deserved and if you compare the brass to what changes hands in the big scheme of things it is still a pittance. The coin will never replace the appreciation shown by the fans and the fact remains that the band have ground out one hell of a trail in which others may care to follow. I crack on, no favours shown, no teary eyed wankage or biased bullshit - what you see is what you get and what I bloody well mean.
Side 1...
The commencement clatters in and 'Polarisation' is under immediate stress due to me being a Subs fan and being very demanding of a powerful and convincing start. With heavyweight cabled bassism, chopping and surging guitar animation, a real fluster no bluster in the tympanic department and Harper's rough house gob work this is an industrious start that knuckledusts forth with exerting verve and traditional modulations we have seen over the past 40 years. A very robust and slamming start that appeals and I move on to 'Oligarchy' hopeful of a follow-up punch right in the attentive smacker. This second song rolls in with more melody and on slightly more tamed tones that sees the construction become a typical verse/chorus/ instrumental song forced down our ever needy throats. Four cymbal splashes, a kaleidoscopic guitar release and forth into the oral kick-back, foamed over a controlled regulation of power chuggery. Rock steady and reliable punk rock that just makes the Subs something quite special. When comparisons are made to bands of the same era isn't it surprising how the most earthy and real this lot still appear to be - fine work!
Third in and as happy as a fly on a turd 'I've Got A Gun' ponders certain armed eventualities and pours forward after a brief pounding that keeps the neurones alert. A sub-radio style of mouth-work leads into a simple chorus that echoes the song title and eventually blows out its arse during a brief solo push. Nothing outrageous this time around but played and produced with an exactness that gets the best out of the job at hand. My favourite track of the first quartet comes next with 'Evil vs Evil' reminding me of vibes past but holding its own character which is stomping, irate and genuinely powerful. Again, what we get is the bog brush basics of a Subboid song, indicating an adherence to the fundamentals, a proof that the fire in the belly still rages and that over all these years the consistency is, in the main, a good thing to behold. The greatest aspect of this song is that snatching chorus and tribalised wind-out fodder for fuckers like me - oomph!
'Proto Feminist' next and a tame song that just names a few women folk who have done their bit to level the balance of the sexes. Some fine women, some bigoted bints (gotta keep it touchy) come and go throughout the tune that wraps around itself and squeezes its own bollocks dry - leaving not much juice for us parched punters to quench our thirst on. A below average ditty but with a cause - maybe I am just a greedy twat. 'Disclosure' is an interesting number that combines cheap confessional sub-shock tactics with a blues cum riff slanted approach. Beneath the upper layers is a throbbing personality in need of attention it seems and with some mind idling lines thrown into the mix I really don't know where I am at with this number. Power-wise this is a bold offering, technically is has some decent angularity and as a movement I feel it is a grower - I just can't see the point of the statements and what the end result is meant to be - tis all bollocks I suppose.
I flit on...
Cracks and splashes, smacks and dashes begin 'Rise' before we wade forth with all hands to the deck. A powerful song that pushes the CD along nicely and has all components firing hard and keeping a good level of sinewy muscle flexed. The gripe I have is that it is run of the mill for the band and nothing out of the ordinary and I find myself with little else to say. A questioning chomper I neither love nor hate with a 'Kicks'y segment thrown in - ooh. 'World War III' is another one in the same groove but the band seem to have their heads further down here and Harper is in tetchy form as a full blown out escapade is had, a bomb blitz that throbs with heave ho angst and disbelieving frustration. A hefty mover that has a black liquid edge, loaded with diseased disgruntlement and poisoning ill temper - come cut me deep ye cunts!
I take stock, Side 1 is finalised - thoughts are of a solid account with some general highs and one or two flat-line moments...
I toss the plastic pancake of sound and it lands the other side up...
Side 2...
'Dope Fiend' is a well-ventilated structure of shifting sound that uses many old tricks and ragged formulas with a mix of well-wanked wires and twatted tympanics and safe and steady tuneism flown through with easy lyrics about a dependant lass who needs to break her own set mould. An average effort for me as is the awkward and care-free trudge of 'I Don't Care'. A song that states the obvious, uses the old punk tag to get its point across and walks with pants around the ankles and makes little progress as a result - nah, a lazy effort lads, sod it. 'Master Race' perspires with more threat, is adorned with rugged chuggery and twilight twinges that resonate deep. Again, nothing outside of the usual box, no challenging accents or angles but a granite, leak-proof push of sound that thumps home the message. Fuck all flags for me, fuck em' I say, we all should be under one banner - friends - simple hey! I like this one a lot, a real spunky monkey with grenades instead of bananas 'Banksy' is a clever play on words that slaps a brush across the walls of society and leaves a message of questioning rebellion. Twisting straight in with a sharpened spiral of sonic screwdriving we move to a refined bass busting verse that rises and brings out our rebellious nature via a chorus that oozes consummate class. Thrown off the wrist with a musical wankers exactitude this is a successful song and energises this second side to jump to new highs. Following on is the rib rattler muck of 'This Machine', a bog brush shit out of bruising noise that isn't the zenith of the CD but is a necessary inclusion to keep the attack varied, of multiple leanings and assorted flavours. A song that takes time to swallow, a roughed-up forcible violation of our most decent senses - if we can remember what they ever were.
Into the last three - come on chaps, a final flourish to fuck off with. 'City Of The Dead' is just what is needed with a sub-skank, pseudo-Rancid-esque jaunt of jollified jingling that takes dark subject matter and flings the point made across on light, jig-inducing tones. An anti-terrorist, reality drenched ditty with a pirate shindig style that really raises the rhythm levels and keeps us intrigued. A shanty it appears before switching down and entering a thoughtful recess where all goes on hold and we seek new light. The chink of clarity comes and we flow with ease to the last breath - nice work. 'Maid Of Orleans' is about J of A and tells a tale of religious lunacy, great achievement and a defiance of odds. In 19 short years this upstanding cross-dressing lass did more than her bit and left her mark in the annals of history for all to admire. The noise made here is choppy, corrugated and with rusted edges that flake away within a non-too melodic offering that reminds me of a song by the band found on the 'Quintessential' album about hanging around in Mexico looking for a hairless dog - come on you know the one. That song was a short, sharp affair whereas this one ponses about and labours the point with a pointless bass pulse thrown into the mix for no real reason at all - bah. The closing chomp sets its rear on fire but again this is average fodder. 'Zeitgeist' is the farewell song, the final full stop of a 26 album rampage and signs off with all ethics and sonic values booming. Pertinent in so much as the punk scene needs to tighten up, get a set of ideals carved in granite and pushed to the hilt. A sedentary lifestyle is of no use, a divided crowd pointless - wake up, show some spirit, share some spirit and...do it yourself, as well as together.
That is it folks, the last UK Subs official album done. Scrutinised and played to buggery I reckon I have remained unbiased and been as honest as can be (gotta maintain my ethics too). A good listen with a few moments not making the grade and an album that will not be the bands best but will certainly not be their worst. In fact I should do a list of the bands releases and try and put em' in some kind of judged order...what a task that would be! So thank you to the Subs for some good years of noise, here's to many more with some single releases along the way and if you have read this then I reckon you should buy the CD for the sheer hell of it, as a way of thanks to the band and out of respect for their efforts. Up the UK Subs."

Album review in Vive Le Rock magazine
Ziezo gets another fantastic review! This time in the latest issue (No.36) of Vive Le Rock magazine, cheers to Shane Baldwin for the words...
Here's Shane's review
UK SUBS
ZIEZO
(PledgeMusic)
The Subs hit the big ‘Z’
9/10
Of course way back in 1979, when singer Charlie Harper, guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist
Paul Slack and drummer Pete Davies named the first UK Subs album ‘Another Kind Of
Blues’, they had no intention of releasing an album for every letter of the alphabet. The
album went to No.21 on the national chart, followed the next year by ‘Brand New Age’, which
made No.18, and their biggest hit, the live album ‘Crash Course’ which soared into the Top
10 at No.8, giving us A, B and C, but it’s still not clear when the band noticed this sequence
and decided to continue it. The Subs’ last chart album, ‘Diminished Responsibility’, with Alvin
Gibbs and Steve Roberts replacing Slack and Davies, went to No.18 in 1981, but while the
hits dried up, and the Subs’ line-up changed with startling rapidity, they established
themselves as one of punk’s most hard-working bands, seasoned road-hogs. And the
albums piled up.
The standard of their mid-period albums, while mostly high, did falter occasionally, with
1991’s ‘Mad Cow Fever’ most fans’ nadir, but it’s been a magnificent run-up to the fabled ‘Z’
album. The current band, with Harper, Gibbs, Jet on guitar and drummer Jamie Oliver, is the
Subs’ longest running line-up, and certainly the best since the early ‘80s, delivering modern
Subs classics in ‘Work In Progress’ (2011), ‘XXIV’ (2013) and ‘Yellow Leader’ (2015), and
now, here we are, at last, with ‘Ziezo’.
The danger could have been that with all the fuss made, and anticipation about, the Subs’
gloriously bonkers achievement in completing a full alphabet of albums, and, apparently,
winning a place in ‘The Guinness Book Of Records’, that the actual quality of the content of
‘Ziezo’ might get lost in the melee. Releasing the album through PledgeMusic, with coloured
vinyl, signed sleeves, signed drum skins, personal appearances etc. has also added to the
hype, but thankfully, having waded through all that (and stumped up 23 notes for the three-
coloured vinyl jobby) when you finally whack ‘Ziezo’ on the turntable, it’s a monster of an
album.
Opener ‘Polarisation’ is a pounding, breathless slab of slickly precise punk metal, followed
by ‘Oligarchy’ a more traditional Subs chugger with soaring choruses, as is Charlie and Jet’s
‘World War 111’, while Alvin’s ‘I’ve Got A Gun’ is a crisp rocker with a killer singalong chorus.
One Subs fan of my acquaintance winces openly at the sound of Charlie’s mouth organ, and
there it is on ‘Disclosure’, but fear not, the song is a pleasingly swaggering spot of rock ‘n’
roll sleaze.
Jamie’s ‘This Machine’ roars along at breakneck speed, a monstrous hardcore workout
nailed down with rock solid drums as Charlie shreds his vocal chords over the top, followed
by the relatively sedate Clash-style reggae rocker ‘City Of The Dead’, and we end with more
traditional Subs fare in Charlie and Jamie’s ‘Zeitgeist’.
Add to all this a truly huge production job by Pat Collier, and you have a UK Subs album that
more than lives up to the occasion.

Pledge Update: 7" single E-mail update
The band have sent out an e-mail to those Pledgers who ordered the 'For Pledgers Only' 7" single under the heading: "For Pledgers Only 7" vinyl mistake"
The e-mail reads:
"Hello again.
We would like to clarify a few points raised on various forums regarding the 'For Pledgers Only' seven inch vinyl.
We wanted to give something that we thought was unique to our pledgers and make the price as cheap as possible. To this end, Alvin submitted two cassettes that he has had in his possession since the recordings were made, over 30 years ago. When he mentioned this we all (Chaz / Jamie/ Jet and Paul North) said "yes! perfect!" We lifted the tracks straight from Alvin's tapes and paid Daniel from NLBF Mastering to clean up the sound as best as possible. There was only a few tracks on the cassettes and we picked the three we thought were the most interesting. Alvin then wrote about them and we included the info in the record along with stamping and signing them all.
It now looks like we may have been mistaken. Whether someone else had these songs at the same time, it appears so! None of us knew this at the time and we apologise. Indeed, had we known, we wouldn't have paid for them to be cleaned up! If anyone feels unhappy about the single please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. where you can arrange a return and a refund will be offered.
It looks like the songs form part of the demonstration tapes LP. This was released in 1984 on vinyl and as we speak not one copy is for sale on discogs in the UK. You can buy the CD from our friends Captain Oi. This is limited to 500 copies.
As for this release there has been 550 sold, 50 kept for the band and 50 on red wax again for band and friends. We are sorry if you have this already, we had no idea this was the same tracks on Alvin's cassette. As if that wasn't bad enough 100 inserts didn't go out. We know who didn't get them and they will be delivered this week.
This whole campaign has been an enormous task and a learning curve for us, so please bear with us. We are 98% of the way to fulfilling everybody's orders and are dealing with any damages and other problems etc.
Thanks for your patience and support,
UK Subs"

Pledge Update: Major Announcement
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Hello everyone,
As you are no doubt aware by now, we are at the very tail end of an incredible campaign which has seen us write and record the 26th and final UK Subs album, Ziezo. The partnership that achieved this feat has spanned the last decade and produced the last 4 albums, providing perhaps the most stable period of UK Subs’ history.
However, as time inevitably presses on, relationships expire and new ones form. And so it is with regret that UK Subs are, by mutual agreement, to part company with guitarist Jet. This may come as a shock to some, but ultimately it is a decision that has not been taken lightly.
We’d like to thank Jet for a decade of outstanding service and wish him the very best in all of his future endeavours. We also extend our thanks to you in advance, for your ongoing support and understanding during this time.
We shall be trying out a few candidates in the coming weeks. Suffice to say we hope our next choice will allow us to continue and thrive through the next phase of UK Subs. In the meantime please do not contact us offering your services or telling us of a friend who would be perfect for the job as we have very specific criteria for what we are looking for and already have people in mind. Further updates to follow.

Pledge Update: ...for all vinyl orders
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Hello folks just an update as to where we are with shipping.
1/ Test pressings. Those have been shipped with the exception of three people who are waiting for an alternative.
2/ The tri-colour vinyl has all been shipped (bar 20 that will be shipped in two to three weeks) and the vast majority of you should have them. There is bound to be a couple of damaged in the post as we have shipped around 1020. If you have a damaged one please contact pledge customer services direct. Please don’t post your enquiries to the message board as we still have to refer you to Pledge, meaning we have to read your enquiry there, then forward it to our people at Pledge, then wait to hear back from them and then get back to you. It’s taking a long time to get back to you like this. We will endeavour to sort out problems asap. However you will need to verify your claim by returning said item. If it is faulty we will replace it of course.
3/ 7" vinyl. We have these in stock and will be despatched within the next few days. We have had to make an insert which was delayed by football! (Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley) The stamp which we ordered was rubbish so we have had to order another one, which we are still waiting for. Bear in mind this will be signed and hand stamped with an insert by Alvin about uber rare tracks. This has taken the longest to prepare out of all of the items. It will be soon. We will ship asap. We will also be in touch with all 7" pledgers regarding a download that will be made available to you shortly.
The vinyl part of this was always going to be the most testing. We are sorry for the delay but we hope the majority of you understand. Please bear in mind we all don’t live in London / we tour and record regularly and we have to fit this in in between all this, which if you are close to the band you will know how tough this has been along with other issues that will come to light… For your information our staff at pledge have commented that is been one of the best ever campaigns in terms of all aspects of the release. Something we are rightly proud of. We thank each and every one of you including the people behind the scenes. See you out on tour!

Pledge Update: Test Pressing E-mail update
The band have sent out an e-mail to those Pledgers who ordered the LP Test Pressing under the heading: "Important test pressing update!"
The e-mail reads:
"Hi,
We are sending out the LP test pressings on Wednesday this week. Unfortunately, there is a minor issue with a small click on one of the songs. In addition to that, the pressing plant sent them to us on black vinyl (we had ordered them on coloured vinyl as advertised) The issue with the click meant that we had to run a second set of test pressings which was pressed on red vinyl. This second run of test pressings doesn't have any clicks at all but they won't arrive with us for another two to three weeks for reasons out of our control. If you are happy to receive the original test pressing, warts and all, on black vinyl then disregard this email - you will receive yours this week. If you would prefer to wait a couple of weeks for the red vinyl which is actually the second test pressing and therefore not the original test pressing then please respond to this email now quoting your order id and we'll update our records. This must be done ASAP please.
Once again apologies for the delay!

"UK Subs - 'Ziezo' (PledgeMusic)
CD Reviews
Written by Dom Daley
Saturday, 14 May 2016 03:00
Who would have thought all those years ago it would even be possible to go from A to Z and who would have seen the UK Subs achieve that feat? I don't mind admitting I never saw it coming but, boy, over the last decade I'm so glad it has gathered momentum culminating in the masterful 'Ziezo'.
Let's face it, the current line up has been stable for quite a number of years now and the recent albums from the 'Warhead' EP have been as good as the band managed from A-E if not better. 'Work In Progress' was as good as they got on record since the first album with a super consistent track list and 'xxiv' wasn't far behind. 'Yellow Leader' fell ever so slightly short of those two but my God I don't want to get hyper critical here because if 'Ziezo' is half as good it will still be better than 90% of any other band's new album.
'Ziezo' begins with what you might refer to as a typical Subs opener, 'Polarisation' goes straight for the jugular. A familiar Jet riff over some phenomenal drumming (as usual) courtesy of Jamie Oliver's jazz hands (and feet) and the real tour de force of the last decade the Alvin Gibbs bass runs that turbo inject proceedings as they rumbles around my speakers as the perfect foil for Jet's superb guitar solo. Charlie doesn't do so badly either as the song brutalises the listener til the final chord.
'Oligarchy' is next up and whilst it's more restrained it isn't afraid to dirty itself in politics. The gang vocals are cool as is Jet's solo (again). 'Oligarchy' has itself a really neat arrangement and sounds like musical velvet. With a more tuneful chorus 'I've Got A Gun' fires off at a great pace but has one of those Subs live fist in the air moments then onto 'Evil Vs Evil' which has some great lyrics as Charlie barks out the orders to a foot stomping bruiser.
'Proto Feminist Heroine' reminds me of some Manics song written for the 'Holy Bible' album (I kid you not). Charlie rattles off famous women who were worthy of being called heroines for sure in a short sharp burst that cuts the mustard in less than two minutes.
Alvin takes the mic for 'Disclosure' and what a fine tune it is. On the first few plays it's certainly contender for the stand out track on the album as there's something about the melody and I always love hearing Charlie's harmonica playing. The song carries a super cool rhythm that builds towards a really decent chorus.
'Dope Fiend' follows 'Tokyo Rose' (from 'Work In Progress') and has a power pop riff and those gang vocals are most welcome.
The middle section of the album is certainly a diverse beast and 'I Don't Care' offers something left of centre, as well as the melody the lyrics are spot on - it's instant and about as easy listening as the Subs are gonna get. Not easy in a pop way but instant and straight forward. Next up is 'Master Race' and whilst the main body of the song is alright it's the outro that will raise a few eyebrows as the Subs go full on '70s pop tastic, folks, with some brilliant shamalamadingdong!
The next couple hurtle along nicely with 'This Machine' going at it harder than 1000 Metallica records could ever muster. There is an elephant in the room as the Subs go all roots reggae on us and, you know what, it's an amazing song. 'The City Of The Damned' is about as good as your Rancids get when they do the white boy reggae and to be fair the arrangement is excellent as they don't over do it with a whole horn ensemble they keep it real with some very nice layers of acoustic guitar. Quite Brilliant!
Bringing up the rear is the fine 'Maid Of Orleans' and to put the full stop on the whole shooting match is 'Zeitgeist' and hearing Charlie laugh at the end is a piece of magic. It might not contain as many super strong songs as some of the most recent records but having sixteen songs there is plenty of variety and styles yet always remaining true to themselves and being instantly recognisable as the UK Subs.
Reaching the finale of A-Z is something I doubt any of us ever envisaged and to finish so strongly is testament to the current line up that has offered up so many great songs. This cant be the end? That would be unfair; maybe now we can begin with numbers or colours just don't stop writing and releasing such great great records.
Jamie, Jet, Alvin and Charlie I salute you, not for the endurance or perseverance but for making so many records that were better or as good as the previous one and so much better than most other bands. The UK Subs have integrity, class and a back catalogue to make anyone blush. Long may it continue, long live the UK Subs!"

Ziezo - First Album Review Posted Online
The splendid Art of the State website has reviewed the new album, giving it a massive thumbs-up, concluding that:
"this album sees the UK Subs hitting harder and more consistently than pretty much anything they’ve done in the meantime, It’s up there with the best of them, 16 tracks of a band once again at the top of their game. I love seeing the Subs play their classics live, you see so many bands right now play their early albums in their entirety – but you know what? I’d love to see this band play this, their latest release, in full – it’s that good."

UK SUBS – ‘Ziezo’ album (16 tracks, released April 2016)
Way back in 1979 the UK Subs released their first album ‘Another Kind Of Blues’. Followed up by ‘Brand New Age’ and ‘Crash Course’ by the time ‘Diminished Responsibility’ came around it was obvious even then to my teenage mind that the album titles were running in alphabetical order. At that time the group reaching the letter Z seemed like an impossible target. Band members joined and left with vocalist Charlie Harper being the only constant throughout. Some albums were more memorable than others but over the last few titles, as the band approached their target, a line up has emerged that really has hit their groove. Ziezo, the last full UK Subs album in the series, is a fitting finale. Full of precision hard hitting drumming, solid bass lines and choppy crunching guitar it delivers throughout. And then there is the voice of Charlie over the top, still with plenty to say and the means to deliver it. He makes a mockery of his advancing years once again on this outing.
‘Polarisation’ opens the album bursting out of a background of discordant sounds, racing to its conclusion. The next three cuts, all around the two and half minute mark, follow on its heel, guitarist Jet really rocking out out on ‘Oligarchy’ before the chant along chorus of ‘Evil vs Evil’. ‘Proto Feminist Heroine’ is more experimental with its list of subjects referenced by the title followed by the bluesy ‘Disclosure’. Normal service then resumes (!) with a slew of great punk songs following one after another with subjects from the master race to enigmatic graffiti artist Banksy only broken up by the Jamie Oliver led thrash drumming of ‘This Machine’. ‘City of Dead’ provides a break with its ska riffing before ‘Maid of Orleans’ and z for ‘Zeitgeist’ close off proceedings in classic UK Subs style.
Thirty seven years after they kicked off with the letter A this album sees the UK Subs hitting harder and more consistently than pretty much anything they’ve done in the meantime, It’s up there with the best of them, 16 tracks of a band once again at the top of their game. I love seeing the Subs play their classics live, you see so many bands right now play their early albums in their entirety – but you know what? I’d love to see this band play this, their latest release, in full – it’s that good.
The cover art is killer too – such a great nod back to Another Kind of Blues.

Pledge Update: Launch Gig Ticket Info
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Hi all,
We’ve had a lot of questions regarding the tickets for our official album launch party on May 2nd so this is how it’ll work. On the night we’ll have a list of everyone’s names and confirmation numbers. You will have received an order number when you pledged for your tickets. All you will need to do is make a note of your order number and say it at the door along with your name and you’ll be given your pin badges and will be granted entry.
Tickets are now available for the event at the venue right now so if anyone is interested in buying tickets the number to call is 02476 347402. Please note: the pin badges are for pledgers only and not for general sale ticket holders.
We hope this clears everything up for you and we’re looking forward to an amazing night!

Pledge Update: Shipping Update!
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Hi folks
Just a quick update as to how we are progressing. Let’s start with the good news. We are signing all of the CDs and books as we speak so 1000 CDs and 300 books. Our shipper will be sending these out straight away along with t-shirts/hoodies/badges/lyric sheets etc etc.
The drum skins will be delivered to us next week.
So we should fulfill these orders in time.
So to the bad news. The vinyl will be delayed to mid May. There has been a number of reasons for this:
1/ we took longer over the art because we were in Europe on tour and time was tight.
2/ when we got the test pressing back it had a click on one of the tracks and this had to be found and rectified.
3/ finally the Renaissance of vinyl continues unabated, we got caught in record store day orders which as you know is now massive.
So if you have bought an LP you will be able to download the LP the same time as the CDs are shipped so you are not penalised for the delay.
We sold in excess of 2500 items, 95% of which have to be signed. For a touring/recording band, finding the time and a venue to achieve this has been tough but we are getting there.
We have been overwhelmed by your support. Thank you all! "

Pledge Update: Working out the parts for 'I've got a gun'
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Here’s a video clip of Alvin starting to teach Jamie the structure of ’I’ve got a gun’. It may sound a little odd with not being able to hear what anyone else is saying on the microphones but hopefully it’ll give you a bit of an insight into how we get the ball rolling in the first place when we start working on a new album.
And just so you know, don’t expect these updates to stop just because the presale campaign has ended! We’ll still send you updates related to Ziezo every now and again :)"

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
A huge big massive thanks to all who have supported us during the Ziezo campaign over the past few months. You have been absolutely incredible and we have been utterly overwhelmed by your response in getting involved and showing the world why UK Subs fans are the best in the universe!
It’s been an epic journey so far but now is when the real work begins for us. In the coming weeks we’ll be signing every single copy of the album, the 7" vinyl, the minibook and the drum skins and then we’ll be shipping everything out to you wonderful people. It’s a mammoth task but one that’s very welcome. We just hope you won’t be disappointed!

This one is called ‘Polarisation’. It’s a bit of a fast and furious one with lots of changes and manic guitars and drums. Tell us what you think and feel free to share it! We’ve made this one available for you to download so you can put it on your computer or iPod etc.

Pledge Update: Excerpt from Alvin's Mini-book
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Hey, ho, not long to go until the UK Sub’s PledgeMusic furfilment day is upon us. Although we are just a month away from overloading the postal services of the world with your pre-ordered choices, there’s still time to procure what remains on offer at our dedicated page at pledgemusic.com/projects/uk-subs-ziezo. There, among some other items, you may yet grab yourself a copy of Alvin’s mini-book: Ziezo: an eyewitness account of the making of a final album by the Punk collective known as the UK Subs, which provides the reader with an unique diary-form insight into the creative day-to-day process that occurred in the studio, the mechanics of how each song was musically and lyrically developed, the occasional tensions and musical variances between band members, and the difficulties of recording an album while simultaneously touring the length and breadth of the UK. There is also some tasty incidents recounted that occurred out of the studio during this recording period as well as some choice anecdotes from the Sub’s past. The text is fully supported by numerous photographs and other relevant images. As a sampler then of what to expect from this extended screed here’s an anecdote from the book that seemed appropriate for inclusion in my December 1st 2015 diary entry. Hope you enjoy giving it a browse and really looking forward to seeing many of you at a gig somewhere, sometime, during our forthcoming spring UK tour.
’Following the Exeter gig – the final show of the series – I stayed with my good friends Patrick and Sarah at their home in Dawlish in Devon. After two relaxing days there I get up silly-early at 5.15 am on the Wednesday morning to catch the train from Exeter to London’s Waterloo Station. Then take a tube ride to Chiswick to join up with the rest of the band for a straight run of five gigs in the following places: Scarborough, Gateshead (adjacent Newcastle), Doncaster and Blackburn, followed by a crazy nine hour drive from Blackburn all the way back down to Devon for an appearance at the Ilfracombe Punk festival.
I don’t really knows how many hundreds of miles of driving this mad sequence of gigs entailed, but it’s not even close to the worst travel schedules that I’ve endured with the UK Subs over the years. One comes instantly to mind: Back in 2006, when Nicky Garratt was still playing guitar with the band, we embarked on a North American tour in the company of the Misfits, the Adicts, Osaka Popstar and two other Punk outfits under the collective touring title of the Fiend Fest. Just prior to flying over there for the tour from France, Nicky ‘phoned me and proposed we share the driving. We always hire a driver for tours, but his reason for abandoning this sound policy was wrapped in the cunning question he proffered me: ‘Have you ever actually driven from one coast of the USA to the other and back again before?’
‘No’, I answered, adding ‘I’ve certainly been driven from one coast to the other and back again many times, but it’s true I’ve not physically taken the wheel for such a marathon journey’.
He pressed his point: ‘See Alvin, you’re forty-eight years old, so this could possibly be your last opportunity to do it’. He then posed another question ‘Why don’t we take it in turns to drive the bus ourselves, just you and me?’
To which I foolishly answered ‘Alright, let’s do it’.
The tour began in Santa Anna, California on the 13th of October and finished in Baltimore, Maryland on the 9th of November 2006. The first series of dates were all on the West coast side of America, concluding with a show at the Key Club on Sunset Blvd, in Hollywood. The subsequent gig though was in Hartford, Connecticut, on the other side of the country. When I checked the mileage from Hollywood to Hartford on the map I realised we were talking about a distance of two-thousand, nine-hundred miles with just three travel days to get there. Every other Fiend Fest band would be flying in the day before the actual gig, but not the Subs, that would be far too easy.
Nicky and I then calculated that in order to reach the Webster Theatre in Hartford in good time for the show we needed to drive solidly for the whole three days and nights: no sleeping in hotels what-so-ever, and being able to only take time out from the highways and byways to fuel-up, eat and use the service-station’s toilet facilities to wash, brush our teeth and do the necessaries. To this end we agreed that I would do the first eight hours of driving, after which Nicky would take over for eight hours, then swop ‘round again, and so on, until we had traversed the USA from the Pacific Ocean to its Atlantic seaboard. And that’s exactly what Garratt and I did, for three days and nights: eight hours on, eight hours off to snatch a little sleep in a back seat of the bus, then grabbing a bit of food when we stopped to refuel before driving on while doing our utmost not to nod off at the wheel.
I drove the last leg into Hartford. Have obtained the venue we loaded in our equipment and just two hours later we took to the stage to play our show. And there are many other epic journeys like this that I’ve undertaken with the UK Subversives during my tenure with the group that I could recount for you if this was the appropriate literary project.
Occasionally we get a support band turning up at a venue that moans to us that they’ve had to voyage a hundred or miles or so to get there. Usually these musicians are much younger than I, certainly way younger than Charlie; and I think to myself ‘Fucking pussies!’ Drive near three thousand miles non-stop for three successive days to play a show and then bitch to me about how difficult and tiring your excursion had been.

Pledge Update: New Track Revealed
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Hi all,
As you are aware our UK tour starts next month and our Pledge campaign ends in 3 weeks time. So we’ve decided to give you another track from Ziezo to wet your appetite a little in the build up to the release. The song is called ‘Maid of Orleans’ and it’s about Joan of Arc. It’s a bit of a slower number with a bit of a contemporary feel to it but it still packs a bit of a punch.
Thanks once again for your incredible and undying support, we are truly humbled by your amazing response to all of this.

Pledge Update: Campaign coming to an end!
The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:
Hi all,
The Ziezo Pledge campaign is coming to an end and we have set a date for its closure. The deadline is now set at midnight on April 3rd, after which point we will start to fulfil each and every one of your pledges. As you can imagine this fulfilment process will inevitably take some time as we have to sign thousands of items but we aim to have all of your items to you by the end of April. Most, if not all of you, will receive your items before the end of April but this gives us some leeway in case we encounter any unforeseen problems.
So to summarise, the items listed will only be available until April 3rd and after that you will start to receive your stuff.
Thanks again for your incredible input and support. We’re almost there!"

Now we have a lot of work to do to get all of your pledges fulfilled and shipped out. This is where the hard work begins for us and it’s a mammoth task but we’ll keep you updated as usual.

U.K. Subs fans to play crucial part for their last album
We may yet record an occasional single or EP in the future, but the Z album will be the very last long playing record from the band. We have therefore determined to involve all of you directly in the process of the making, manufacturing and release of this decisive LP.
The official start date for our Pledge campaign will be 1st November 2015.
