Brilliant Interview With Charlie In 'Fear & Loathing' Fanzine

You can now read online an absolutely superb interview with Charlie Harper on the 'Fear And Loathing' fanzine website.
Conducted by Andy P, editor and brains behind this ever brilliant fanzine, the interview took place after the soundcheck for the Subs' 100 Club gig on 21 May 2016, a few weeks after the release of the 'Ziezo' album. Just as this fanzine's superb 2008 Subs interview was (issue 63), this is one of the most infomative and fascinating interviews with Charlie that you will read...
Covering Charlie's early life and musical journey through to the final Subs album and beyond, here are a few example quotes...

"But while we were there, a bomb landed right next to our house, almost a direct hit, and our house collapsed into the harbour..."
"Funnily enough, my Mum and my Aunt actually used to come to the 100 Club to dance to the Jazz bands..."
"...then the Rolling Stones came along. Once I saw them, I was hooked. I loved everything about them and I’d follow them everywhere. I mean, there were times when I’d get to see them three times in a week..."
"I only had a small room, but I painted this big Sixties-style mural on the wall, and added ‘November 17th, 1965’. That was the first time I played music onstage, although at the time I was playing folk music..."

Ex-Subs Bassist Set For Lift Off With New Band

Ex-U.K. Subs bassist Ricky McGuire's new music project is the "new alt rock band" ROCKET66 from London whose sound also encompasses rock, punk, soul and ska.
Rocket66 is the new venture of Carl Engelmarc (The Members) on guitar, Ricky McGuire (U.K. Subs, The Men They Couldn't Hang) on bass, Dave Broderick (Last Of The Teenage Idols) on drums and featuring maverick newcomer Alex Love on vocals.
The band formed in early 2015 when Carl, Ricky and Dave met in the now dormant/hibernating punk band The Fits. They have been writing and recording demos at Miloco studios in Bermondsey, London, which has resulted in 8 brand new songs.
In the meantime, they plan to fully record these in November/December and are looking to initially release an EP followed by an album in the new year.
There's also talk of doing a video to coincide with the release of the EP and they'll be looking for gigs to promote these.
The band's live debut is scheduled for the 27th October @Barnets punk night at The Alley Cat on Denmark Street, London.
Doors open at 7:30pm, admission is £5-00 and Rocket66 are due on stage at 8:15pm, providing support to the The London Sewage Company, who themselves are due on stage at 9:00pm.
Rocket66 have their own Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/rckt66/ where you can stay up to date for more info, demos, videos, events and gigs.

5 page Charlie interview in Classic Rock magazine

The latest issue of CLASSIC ROCK magazine - dated September 2016 - features a 5 page interview and feature with Charlie, written by Ian Fortnam (pages 66-70).
Entitled 'A Street Punk Named Charlie', this excellent interview covers Charlie's early life, influences and inspirations, as well as his experiences with the U.K. Subs...
"Early on I fell in with a bunch of beatniks. We were playing the Woody Guthrie and Jack Elliott songbooks. Those guys taught me to play guitar and harmonica, so that’s what I did.
When I was fourteen I got a guitar that cost eight quid which I paid off by instalments. It had Bert Weedon’s Play In A Day guitar book with it, so I learnt to play my three chords in twenty minutes and was off..."

'Sharp! Flicknife Records And Other Adventures'

New book to feature Charlie Harper content

Marco 'Frenchy' Gloder, the man behind Flicknife Records, who put out Charlie Harper's debut solo album 'Stolen Property' back in 1982 as well as the Urban Dogs' second long-player 'No Pedigree' in 1985 has been working with Greg Healey to bring you the untold story of his life and times.

Over two years in the making, the book is to be entitled 'SHARP! Flicknife Records And Other Adventures' and is set for publication on 1 September 2016 by New Haven Publishing Ltd, with the ISBN: 9781910705421.

The following news story appeared on the FLICKNIFE BLOG about the forthcoming book:

"'Sharp! Flicknife Records and Other Adventures' is an unflinching and honest portrait of Marc ‘Frenchy’ Gloderʼs journey from Grenoble ghetto to independent record label success at the heart of Londonʼs music scene.
Published on 1st September 2016 by New Haven, Marco ‘Frenchy’ Gloder's memoirs is co-written with Greg Healey and is the result of over two years of extensive interviews. A fascinating and in depth insight into the world of counter culture and alternative music, from the mid 1960s to the early 1990s, it touches on Soul boys, freaks, punks, goth and beyond.
A tale of tragedy, excess, adventure and close calls it describes Europeʼs exploding post war youth movements at first hand.
Frenchy gives a unique insight into the festivals, communes and student strikes of the late 1960s, life in the squats of early Punk, and the rise of independent music in the 80s.
Be it the street gangs of his youth, who settled their differences with knife fights, or his doomed attempt to smuggle heroin from Iran that ended in imprisonment in an Iranian jail, Frenchyʼs story has the kind of drama that comes from living life on the edge.
As he found his place in the music business with the launch of Flicknife, Frenchy worked with some of the most important names in alternative music. Hawkwind, Alien Sex Fiend , Charlie Harper, Glen Matlock, The Saints, The Barracudas and many more found a home on his label, and he hung out with a host of others, including Lemmy, Jimmy Page and the Velvet Undergroundʼs Nico.
A truly extraordinary memoir of truly extraordinary times.
There you have it Flickers, everything you've ever wanted to know about the life of Frenchy and the founding of Flicknife in one snappy lookin' book! It'll be available from all good retailers from September 1st..."

MAJOR U.K. SUBS ANNOUNCEMENT!!

New Guitarist joins the band...

 Introducing...

   STEVE STRAUGHAN

The band have today (17 June 2016) announced the replacement on guitar for Jet with the following statement via their official Facebook page:

"During the course of the last couple of weeks there's been a lot of speculation as to who will be joining UK Subs as the new guitarist.

In selecting a shortlist of potential candidates we were looking for someone with a firm grasp of the fundamentals, a good sound knowledge of the UK Subs and punk rock in general, experience of being on the road, a burning passion for music and the ability to adapt to a variety of situations. In addition to these core elements we also wanted a real, honest person who would fit in with the ethos of the band as it has been known for many years.

Please join us in welcoming to the Subs camp, Mr. Steve Straughan. In recent times, Steve has been the axeman for our fellow old school veterans the Angelic Upstarts, as well as his own project the Hi-Fi Spitfires, who have steadily been building up quite a following on the continent.

Although the introduction of any new band member is a tentative process and will inevitably be subject to review, we are confident that Steve has fulfilled all of the aforementioned criteria, and is therefore the right man for the job. We hope that with Steve's expertise and your cherished support we can continue and thrive through this next phase of the UK Subs.

Charlie, Alvin and Jamie"

In a worldwide exclusive, Time & Matter can also proudly present the very first interview with Steve, following his officially joining the Subs family...

It's here! T&M 023, and this really is the ultimate U.K. Subs rarest of rare recordings!

AN ESSENTIAL MUST-HAVE FOR ANY U.K. SUBS FANATIC AND/OR PUNK HISTORIAN

This amazing two track 7" single release boasts never before released tracks that have seldom been heard since they were recorded in the summer of 1977.

Featuring the original U.K. Subs line up of:
CHARLIE HARPER - vocals/harmonica, RICHARD ANDERSON - guitar,
STEVE SLACK - bass & ROB HARPER - drums...

...this was the demo that Nicky Garratt heard and "was impressed" by before deciding on joining the band in October 1977.

Featuring the Harper classic 'I Live In A Car' and a cover of John Presley's 'I Couldn't Be You', both of which would remain standards and popular favourites in the Subs' live set for the decades that followed, you will be amazed at how well formed these songs are, even in these very first studio recordings, made circa July/August 1977 at The Tooting Music Centre in London.

Taken from a "third generation cassette" that had been in the collection of Rob Harper, who prior to joining the U.K. Subs had been the drummer for The Clash during their infamous December 1976 'Anarchy In The U.K.' tour with the Sex Pistols, these incredibly rare Subs recordings have been brilliantly mastered by Tim Turan at Turan Audio and despite various drop-outs in the sound quality on such an old recording, especially taken from such a delicate format, they have been superbly and painstakingly restored to the highest quality possible for this historic recording and release.

What more could a Subs vinyl junkie wish for?

This release is strictly limited to 500 hand numbered copies on 7" dual blue coloured vinyl, and is issued in a classy matt finished sleeve as well as an inner sleeve boasting liner notes from both guitarist Richard Anderson AND drummer Rob Harper.

In yet another amazing first for the Time & Matter team, this is the first time that Anderson has spoken or written about his time with the band.
The inner sleeve also features the only known photos of this inaugral Subs line-up and the 7" single's striking artwork utilises the font from the t-shirt that Steve Slack can be seen wearing onstage in 1977.

MAJOR U.K. SUBS ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Guitarist JET leaves the band...

The band have posted a "major announcement" via their Ziezo album Pledge page announcing the departure of long-time guitarist Jet.

The statement reads:
"As you are no doubt aware by now, we are at the very tail end of an incredible campaign which has seen us write and record the 26th and final U.K. Subs album, Ziezo.

The partnership that achieved this feat has spanned the last decade and produced the last 4 albums, providing perhaps the most stable period of U.K. Subs' history. However, as time inevitably presses on, relationships expire and new ones form. And so it is with regret that U.K. Subs are, by mutual agreement, to part company with guitarist Jet. This may come as a shock to some, but ultimately it is a decision that has not been taken lightly.

We'd like to thank Jet for a decade of outstanding service and wish him the very best in all of his future endeavours. We also extend our thanks to you in advance, for your ongoing support and understanding during this time. We shall be trying out a few candidates in the coming weeks. Suffice to say we hope our next choice will allow us to continue and thrive through the next phase of U.K. Subs. In the meantime please do not contact us offering your services or telling us of a friend who would be perfect for the job as we have very specific criteria for what we are looking for and already have people in mind. Further updates to follow.

Charlie, Alvin and Jamie"

Ziezo LP Pledge Update: ...for all vinyl orders

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Update for all vinyl orders

Hello folks just an update as to where we are with shipping.
1/ Test pressings. Those have been shipped with the exception of three people who are waiting for an alternative.
2/ The tri-colour vinyl has all been shipped (bar 20 that will be shipped in two to three weeks) and the vast majority of you should have them. There is bound to be a couple of damaged in the post as we have shipped around 1020. If you have a damaged one please contact pledge customer services direct. Please don’t post your enquiries to the message board as we still have to refer you to Pledge, meaning we have to read your enquiry there, then forward it to our people at Pledge, then wait to hear back from them and then get back to you. It’s taking a long time to get back to you like this. We will endeavour to sort out problems asap. However you will need to verify your claim by returning said item. If it is faulty we will replace it of course.
3/ 7" vinyl. We have these in stock and will be despatched within the next few days. We have had to make an insert which was delayed by football! (Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley) The stamp which we ordered was rubbish so we have had to order another one, which we are still waiting for. Bear in mind this will be signed and hand stamped with an insert by Alvin about uber rare tracks. This has taken the longest to prepare out of all of the items. It will be soon. We will ship asap. We will also be in touch with all 7" pledgers regarding a download that will be made available to you shortly.
The vinyl part of this was always going to be the most testing. We are sorry for the delay but we hope the majority of you understand. Please bear in mind we all don’t live in London / we tour and record regularly and we have to fit this in in between all this, which if you are close to the band you will know how tough this has been along with other issues that will come to light… For your information our staff at pledge have commented that is been one of the best ever campaigns in terms of all aspects of the release. Something we are rightly proud of. We thank each and every one of you including the people behind the scenes. See you out on tour!

Pledge Update: Test Pressing E-mail update

The band have sent out an e-mail to those Pledgers who ordered the LP Test Pressing under the heading: "Important test pressing update!"
The e-mail reads:

"Hi,

We are sending out the LP test pressings on Wednesday this week. Unfortunately, there is a minor issue with a small click on one of the songs. In addition to that, the pressing plant sent them to us on black vinyl (we had ordered them on coloured vinyl as advertised) The issue with the click meant that we had to run a second set of test pressings which was pressed on red vinyl. This second run of test pressings doesn't have any clicks at all but they won't arrive with us for another two to three weeks for reasons out of our control. If you are happy to receive the original test pressing, warts and all, on black vinyl then disregard this email - you will receive yours this week. If you would prefer to wait a couple of weeks for the red vinyl which is actually the second test pressing and therefore not the original test pressing then please respond to this email now quoting your order id and we'll update our records. This must be done ASAP please.

Once again apologies for the delay!

Pledge Update: Tricolour LP & 7" single!

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Tricolour/7" update!
Hi folks,
Just a quick update as to where we are. The coloured vinyl albums were shipped out to the UK customers yesterday, and the international orders are being completed today and tomorrow. However, the pressing plant has sent us 35 records less than we ordered so our plan is to fulfil everybody’s orders but if you’ve ordered 3 or 4, you may only receive 2 records for now, with the remaining copies following in due course. The is the only fair way we could manage the discrepancy. We are very happy with the way it looks and sounds and we think you will be too.
Regarding the 7" records, we have received them and will be signing them before our Southampton gig this evening at the Talking Heads. These will be packaged and shipped on Monday/Tuesday."

The ever-fabulous Uber Rock website has given the U.K. Subs' final album a fantastic review.
Written by Dom Daley, his review concludes:

"Jamie, Jet, Alvin and Charlie I salute you, not for the endurance or perseverance but for making so many records that were better or as good as the previous one and so much better than most other bands. The UK Subs have integrity, class and a back catalogue to make anyone blush. Long may it continue, long live the UK Subs!"

New Urban Dogs Album To Be Recorded

URBAN DOGS: ATTACK!

Time & Matter Records is delighted to announce that they have once again signed up the Urban Dogs, this time to record a brand new studio album.

The full original band, originally formed in 1982 - Charlie Harper (vocals), Knox (guitar), Alvin Gibbs (bass) and Matthew Best (drums) are booked to go into ex-Vibrators' Pat Collier's Perry Vale Studios in London on Monday 9 May 2016 to record the follow up to the critically acclaimed acoustic album 'Bonefield'. The U.K. Subs recorded their final 4 albums with Pat, as did the Urban Dogs with their superb last T&M release, the 7" single 'Rebellion Song'.

The new album will be entitled ATTACK and as Knox told T&M recently: "I have a feeling that this album will be what people will be hoping it is, loud! We'll show that we still have some of our fire left..."

The prospect of recording URBAN DOGS: ATTACK is also something that has got drummer Matthew Best excited; he enthused to T&M that he "...can't wait to get back in the studio with Knox, Charlie and Alvin for the first time in what seems like - and for some people actually is - a lifetime. Looking forward to doing some originals and a couple of interesting covers in our own - hopefully - inimitable way. I will be doing a studio diary and taking lots of photos so stay tuned for further updates!  Starting Monday!"

One of the tentatively planned covers is of the Monkees' 1967 hit '(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone', but with the Dogs back growling at their roaring best - anything could happen!

There are also plans to release a single from the sessions, as both Charlie and Knox both revealed to T&M that they have a big cache of new songs to choose from for the recording sessions, with Knox adding that "I'm still deciding on my songs and the titles as they might be different or changed when the album comes out..."

Charlie told T&M that he "has three really strong songs for definite, one of which has a Halloween theme, possibly to be called 'Trick or Treat'."

The album artwork, which we will reveal details of after the recordings, will be of a 'traditional Urban Dogs release' nature! We can however reveal that Knox will do the front and Charlie the back!

Time & Matter are excited to also announce that they have engaged the renowned London-based portrait, music and editorial photographer Tina Korhonen, who is a big fan and friend of both Charlie and Knox, to provide publicity shots as well as inner sleeve images.

Original and returning bassist Mr Alvin Gibbs has also revealed further details to T&M:
"I’ve written three pretty strong songs - if I say so myself, both music and lyrics - for the Dogs album; the titles of which are as follows: ‘Goddamn Liar’, ‘Sidewalk Baby’ and ‘World’s End Apocalypse’, the latter song being a musical love letter to Vivienne Westwood. I’ve also arranged a rocking version of ‘You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory’ by Johnny Thunders as one of the cover tracks, which Charlie tells me he’s eager to sing and also incorporate in his solo set..."

An Urban Dogs album launch show is being set up for November 17, 2016 at the 100 Club in London, so keep watching this space folks!

To coincide with the original Urban Dogs being re-united, there are new social media sites now set up at:

U.K. Subs Mobile App Discontinued

The U.K. Subs Mobile App has unfortunately had to be discontinued and taken 'offline' due to excessive charges, which made the running of the App uneconomical. New U.K. Subs Specialist Label Launched By Combat Rock

  ...introducing 'French Connection Records'

STATEMENT FROM CAPS COMBAT ROCK:

"Hello!
My name is Caps and I run the ‘Combat Rock’ record label in France. I also play in a band called Charge 69.
I discovered UK SUBS via their first album ‘Another Kind Of Blues’ when I immediately became a fan. I first became friends with Charlie Harper in the early 80's and have seen the band many, many times since, in a lot of different countries. My passion for the Subs has increased over the many years since and despite loving lots of other bands I still regard the Subs as my favourite combo for so many reasons – the consistent quality of their records, never giving up through nearly 40 years, as well the kindness they always show to their audience and so on.
All this has now led me to start a subsidiary label of ‘Combat Rock' records, which will be called, ‘French Connection’; in order to solely release recordings by the UK SUBS. These releases will be for the band’s “diehard fans”. Each release will be limited editions of 500 copies. These will not be bootlegs however, as all the records will be issued through agreement with the band.
This first production is a live recording of their concert in Bremen – Germany in 1982 with the line-up of Charlie Harper, Nicky Garratt, Alvin Gibbs and Kim Wylie on drums. Previously only available on a DVD, I personally loved the recording so much that I thought it would be great to get a vinyl version of it. I hope you'll love this new version as much as me!

I'm already planning new records but if you have ideas or recordings you think would be ideal for sharing via my new label then please feel free to get in touch at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Here’s hoping that we'll keep on this adventure.

UK SUBS Fanatic until the End!"

Ziezo - First Album Review Posted Online

The splendid Art of the State website has reviewed the new album, giving it a massive thumbs-up, concluding that:

"this album sees the UK Subs hitting harder and more consistently than pretty much anything they’ve done in the meantime, It’s up there with the best of them, 16 tracks of a band once again at the top of their game. I love seeing the Subs play their classics live, you see so many bands right now play their early albums in their entirety – but you know what? I’d love to see this band play this, their latest release, in full – it’s that good."

Pledge Update: Shipping Update!

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Shipping update!
Hi folks
Just a quick update as to how we are progressing. Let’s start with the good news. We are signing all of the CDs and books as we speak so 1000 CDs and 300 books. Our shipper will be sending these out straight away along with t-shirts/hoodies/badges/lyric sheets etc etc.
The drum skins will be delivered to us next week.
So we should fulfill these orders in time.
So to the bad news. The vinyl will be delayed to mid May. There has been a number of reasons for this:
1/ we took longer over the art because we were in Europe on tour and time was tight.
2/ when we got the test pressing back it had a click on one of the tracks and this had to be found and rectified.
3/ finally the Renaissance of vinyl continues unabated, we got caught in record store day orders which as you know is now massive.
So if you have bought an LP you will be able to download the LP the same time as the CDs are shipped so you are not penalised for the delay.
We sold in excess of 2500 items, 95% of which have to be signed. For a touring/recording band, finding the time and a venue to achieve this has been tough but we are getting there.
We have been overwhelmed by your support. Thank you all!

Again, the full update and comments section can only be accessed using the Access Pass included with your Pledge. Check it out HERE

Pledge Update: Working out the parts for 'I've got a gun'

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Working out the parts for 'I've got a gun'
Here’s a video clip of Alvin starting to teach Jamie the structure of ’I’ve got a gun’. It may sound a little odd with not being able to hear what anyone else is saying on the microphones but hopefully it’ll give you a bit of an insight into how we get the ball rolling in the first place when we start working on a new album.
And just so you know, don’t expect these updates to stop just because the presale campaign has ended! We’ll still send you updates related to Ziezo every now and again :)"

Pledge Update: Campaign Ends!

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Elvis has left the building!
A huge big massive thanks to all who have supported us during the Ziezo campaign over the past few months. You have been absolutely incredible and we have been utterly overwhelmed by your response in getting involved and showing the world why UK Subs fans are the best in the universe!
It’s been an epic journey so far but now is when the real work begins for us. In the coming weeks we’ll be signing every single copy of the album, the 7" vinyl, the minibook and the drum skins and then we’ll be shipping everything out to you wonderful people. It’s a mammoth task but one that’s very welcome. We just hope you won’t be disappointed!
Cheers everyone, love and respect x "

Pledge Update: Another  Song Released...

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"One last song before we close!

As you all know there is very little time left before the Ziezo campaign ends on Sunday night, so we’ve decided to give you one last track before we start shipping out all of your items.
This one is called ‘Polarisation’. It’s a bit of a fast and furious one with lots of changes and manic guitars and drums. Tell us what you think and feel free to share it! We’ve made this one available for you to download so you can put it on your computer or iPod etc.
Big thanks to Big Andy for jumping up on the drums for the intro section of the song before it kicks in, we know you didn’t want to do it but nice one!
Music written by Jamie Oliver, lyrics by Charlie Harper."

Pledge Update: Excerpt from Alvin's Mini-book

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Have an excerpt from Alvin's mini-book!
Hey, ho, not long to go until the UK Sub’s PledgeMusic furfilment day is upon us. Although we are just a month away from overloading the postal services of the world with your pre-ordered choices, there’s still time to procure what remains on offer at our dedicated page at pledgemusic.com/projects/uk-subs-ziezo. There, among some other items, you may yet grab yourself a copy of Alvin’s mini-book: Ziezo: an eyewitness account of the making of a final album by the Punk collective known as the UK Subs, which provides the reader with an unique diary-form insight into the creative day-to-day process that occurred in the studio, the mechanics of how each song was musically and lyrically developed, the occasional tensions and musical variances between band members, and the difficulties of recording an album while simultaneously touring the length and breadth of the UK. There is also some tasty incidents recounted that occurred out of the studio during this recording period as well as some choice anecdotes from the Sub’s past. The text is fully supported by numerous photographs and other relevant images. As a sampler then of what to expect from this extended screed here’s an anecdote from the book that seemed appropriate for inclusion in my December 1st 2015 diary entry. Hope you enjoy giving it a browse and really looking forward to seeing many of you at a gig somewhere, sometime, during our forthcoming spring UK tour.
’Following the Exeter gig – the final show of the series – I stayed with my good friends Patrick and Sarah at their home in Dawlish in Devon. After two relaxing days there I get up silly-early at 5.15 am on the Wednesday morning to catch the train from Exeter to London’s Waterloo Station. Then take a tube ride to Chiswick to join up with the rest of the band for a straight run of five gigs... READ THE REST HERE

Pledge Update: New Track Revealed

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Have another track!!!
Hi all,
As you are aware our UK tour starts next month and our Pledge campaign ends in 3 weeks time. So we’ve decided to give you another track from Ziezo to wet your appetite a little in the build up to the release. The song is called ‘Maid of Orleans’ and it’s about Joan of Arc. It’s a bit of a slower number with a bit of a contemporary feel to it but it still packs a bit of a punch.
Thanks once again for your incredible and undying support, we are truly humbled by your amazing response to all of this.
Let us know what you think!"

JAMIE RECORDING WITH LOUISE DISTRAS AGAIN

Brilliant punk songstress Louise Distras returned to the studio last week, where she has begun working on new material with producer Steve Whale and engineer Pat Collier for her second album, the much anticipated follow up to 2013s critically acclaimed debut long-player 'Dreams From The Factory Floor'.
U.K. Subs drummer Jamie Oliver drummed on Louise's fantastic first album and he joined Louise again last week to participate in the follow-up's recording, again, at Pat Collier's Perry Vale Studio.
The fabulous Uber Rock website recently reported that "...having been heralded for her ability to incorporate the acoustic guitar into riotous pop songs, Distras's star continues to rise in 2016 with the heavily anticipated follow up to her critically acclaimed debut 'Dreams from the Factory Floor'.
The past three years has seen Louise Distras cutting her teeth across the UK, Europe, Canada and the USA with the likes of Billy Bragg, Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers and The Damned, taking in festival appearances at Glastonbury, Bearded Theory, Rebellion, Camden Rocks and Punk Rock Bowling (USA) whilst receiving notable praise from The Guardian, Big Cheese,New Noise and Big Takeover magazines aswell as BBC Radio 1, XFM, Team Rock Radio, and KROQ who have all accurately pinpointed Distras' sound as "the rebirth of British punk; reinvented for a new generation"...

Pledge Update: Campaign coming to an end!

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Our campaign is coming to an end!
Hi all,
The Ziezo Pledge campaign is coming to an end and we have set a date for its closure. The deadline is now set at midnight on April 3rd, after which point we will start to fulfil each and every one of your pledges. As you can imagine this fulfilment process will inevitably take some time as we have to sign thousands of items but we aim to have all of your items to you by the end of April. Most, if not all of you, will receive your items before the end of April but this gives us some leeway in case we encounter any unforeseen problems.
So to summarise, the items listed will only be available until April 3rd and after that you will start to receive your stuff.
Thanks again for your incredible input and support. We’re almost there!"

We’re back in Blighty following an incredible European tour. Massive thanks go out to all who came out to see us over the last 5 weeks and especially to those who travelled all the way from the UK. Now we have a lot of work to do to get all of your pledges fulfilled and shipped out. This is where the hard work begins for us and it’s a mammoth task but we’ll keep you updated as usual.
Once again we’d like to thank you all for your incredible support over the last few months. We are on the home straight!"

Luckily we have been able to secure just 100 more and that’s it. These last 100 will be limited to two per order. If orders are more than two they will not be fulfilled so be warned!
Also if you want one of the tri colour lps they are going fast. Again limited to two per order.
We are nearing the end of our campaign and we will then start to manufacturer the various parts. We hope to have all the pledged items with you by the end of April. Further information to follow! Cheers!

Previously Unreleased Tracks On New U.K. Subs Compilation

U.S record label Cleopatra are scheduled to release a new U.K. Subs compilation in the next few weeks entitled 'Friends and Relations'.
Featuring the three tracks from the Subs' 2011 single 'Product Supply', along with the four tracks that make up the Charlie Harper & Captain Sensible E.P. 'Too Much Reality', as well as both sides of the Urban Dogs 'Rebellion Song' single; all of which were released by T&M, this essential compilation also boasts two tracks from the Noise Annoys 2005 re-issue of 'A.W.O.L' as well as those all important unreleased five tracks by Target Generation.

Target Generation were formed by Nicky Garratt, Alvin Gibbs and Kim Wylie when the line-up of the Subs they played in imploded after the band's tour of Poland in 1983. They were joined by Ken Scott and Mel Wesson. Kim Wylie left and was replaced by Ken Scott's brother, Andy, both formerly of Wasted Youth. This line-up recorded a five track demo for EMI but ultimately fell apart shortly after with these tracks never being released, until now!

'Friends and Relations' features liner notes by Charlie Harper, Nicky Garratt and Alvin Gibbs in its 6 page colour foldout booklet, comprises sixteen tracks and has a catalogue number of CLO 0186.
The CD and LP will be available in North America only through Cleopatra and via the Time & Matter webstore for the Rest of the World.
T&M will be selling the CD at £10.00 plus postage, with the vinyl price yet to be set.
Keep your eyes on T&M for more news as it happens...

Pledge Update: Coloured Vinyl LP last chance to order

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"Coloured wax vinyl LP: Going...going...
…. Not quite gone!
Folks, if you want to get your hands on a copy of Ziezo on a tri coloured wax vinyl the time to do it is now. We have made this so everybody can get one but we are now at the point where we need to start finalising the number of vinyls we get pressed, meaning that after this week there will be a limit on the tri coloured wax vinyl. After that, once they’re gone, Ziezo will only be available on black vinyl for the foreseeable future.
Similarly, we’ve also had to finalise the number of the ‘For Pledgers Only’ vinyl because of the constraints associated with pressing 7" vinyl so this is now limited. Again, once these are gone, they’re gone. There will be no rerelease of this.
Here’s a very very basic mock up of what the LP will look like, although you’ll have to use your imagination a little bit!"

Pledge Update: Alvin's Book - reminder...

The band have posted a new update at 10:00am via their Pledge page:

"Alvin's book!

Some of you may know that the formidable UK Subs and former Iggy Pop bassmeister Alvin Gibbs is writing a minibook about the making of the last ever UK Subs album ‘Ziezo’. This historical document will provide a detailed account of the entire process from beginning to end, talking you through the highs and lows of getting over the final hurdle in a mammoth forty year mission for the UK Subs: to sequentially release an album for every letter of the alphabet.
Alvin is an accomplished author known for his works which include ‘Neighbourhood Threat: On Tour With Iggy Pop’ and ‘Destroy: The Definitive History of Punk’. His latest offering promises not to disappoint.
‘Ziezo: an eyewitness account of the making of the final album by the punk collective known as the UK Subs’ is available for pre-order now on Pledge Music and is limited to just 300 copies.
This is the front cover!"

U.K. Subs reveal brand new song via Pledge

The band have released a brand new song entitled 'I've Got A Gun' via their ongoing Pledge campaign for the forthcoming final studio album 'Ziezo'

Released through an update on 24 January 2016 via their Pledge page and therefore exclusive to anyone who has so far pledged for the new album, the new song was written by Alvin Gibbs "about a redneck threatening to go on a rampage"; the lyrics are reproduced below:

'Got myself an armoury, every type of weaponry, M16s and 45s, enough to take a thousand lives: gifts from god, state approved, mess with me and you’ll be removed
(Chorus) I’ve got a gun, I’ve got a gun, I’ve got a gun!
Gun fire makes me warm inside, patriotic, misty eyed, murdering animals just for fun, perhaps a human before I’m done: bullets that penetrate, exit wounds the size of a plate
(Chorus) I’ve got a gun, I’ve got a gun, I’ve got a gun!
Dream of killing a president, an avenging angel heaven sent, and if I do don’t be surprised, you should have seen it in my eyes: gifts from god, state approved, mess with me you’ll be removed, bullets that penetrate, exit wounds the size of a plate.'

Pledge Update: Important Message re Name on LP Pledgers

The band have posted a new update via their Pledge page:

"VERY VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL LP NAME PLEDGERS
Firstly thanks so much for all your support so far, it’s been amazing. We have over 700 names to go on our LP now! As you would expect though, this brings its own complications in terms of art and space.
We asked you all to put forward your name and location in a specific format: first name, last name and location eg., Jamie Oliver, Nuneaton. If your pledge does not meet this criteria then it cannot go on the LP.
Some of you have submitted multiple names, added funny nicknames, messages etc. Remember it is one name per pledge and one location only (town/city or country – not both) If you’ve submitted multiple names but have pledged for them separately then don’t worry, your pledges will be honoured – this goes out to those who have pledged once but submitted two or even three names. If you have a nickname it needs to be a substitute for either your first or last name. Otherwise we just will not have the space to get everyone on.
Please check what you have asked for and make sure it’s like the above otherwise we cannot guarantee it will go on the LP/CD. To amend your entry simply go to www.pledgemusic.com/pledges and contact customer services by clicking the ‘Contact us about your pledge’ button. As we are getting close to finishing the art you need to do this now please.
If you haven’t put your name forward and want to there is seven days left before we close off this particular aspect of Pledge.
So please check your pledges now to avoid missing out.
Thanks a lot, we’re getting there!"
