Another good review for XXIV
Ozzyludo has sent us a copy of the review he wrote for La Mine fanzine plus some photos he took at the recent Zikenstock Festival, Le Cataeu (near Lille), France:
Translation underneath the original in French, Thanks Ozzy!
SUBS on tour forever ». Ozzyludo for La Mine fanzine (www.fanzine-lamine.com)"
"Charlie Harper and his boys have just released their 24th LP simply titled "XXIV". The UK SUBS with the particularity to publish their official albums alphabetically, Charlie (69 years) will soon succeed his bet initiated in 1979 with the debut album "Another Kind Of Blues"! Yet it started badly ... In late 2011, the group announced that it plans to enter the studio in London Perry Vale belonging to Pat Collier ex-Vibrators bassist. The album was then called "XXX", a CD containing electrical titles, another acoustic tracks and finally a live DVD. Moreover, fans of Subs is perhaps several years Charlie Harper spoke of the fact that the title of this album "X-Members" where all former band members have participated recall. Exciting, but ultimately it is (almost) none of this. The excellent Captain Oi label plans to finally get one simple CD containing 14 songs accompanied by electric 12 other acoustic as a bonus for October 2012. No meeting with old but just the current line-up consists of veterans Charlie Harper on vocals and Alvin Gibbs on bass, and new recruits Jamie Oliver on drums and Jet guitar. Latest twist, "XXIV" does not ultimately released in late 2012, but February 6th, 2013! Moreover, fans awaited the UK SUBS at the turn after the great "Work In Progress" released on 3 March 2011 and praised by critics. Our wait was finally rewarded! First the object, a beautiful digipack card to red, green and black, with inside a CD containing 26 tracks (the first edition LP is a black vinyl with only 14 electric tracks). Four Subs have all written or composed something either alone or with others. It's a real collective work confirms that this intergenerational training is one of the most stable and efficient the turbulent history of this legendary group that a biographer would be hard to reconstruct his family tree, so there were movements between the official discography, the live, compilations and world tours rooms mythical stages through pubs or squats more or less grimey. Is that it has had its ups and downs Sir Charlie Harper! But as he puts it "Born a rocker, die a rocker" but also "UK SUBS on tour forever." "XXIV" is thus a continuation of "Work In Progress" is its sequel but more successful, more successful and mixing different artistic sensibilities of each. The young Jamie Oliver gives new life thanks to the group composed current and punchy sounds like "Implosion 77" and "Rabid", but also the very motörheadien "Momento Mori" on throbbing bass brilliantly closing the electrical section. Guitarist Jet continues the punk-rock tradition with more conventional securities respecting the spirit of Subs but, in addition, its characteristic approach as the "Monkeys" or "Workers Revolution." But personally, the big surprise is written titles and mostly sung by bassist Alvin Gibbs, a member of the second classical training Subs in the early 80's and musician Iggy Pop later (I recommend you also his book "Iggy Pop - The internal threat" published by White Truck). Alvin sign in "XXIV" some of the most beautiful songs that are both effective and stick you goosebumps. Whether "Black Power Salute" supported by his accent or weighing "Stare at the Sun" I do not get tired. Alvin is doing very well indeed with a component tailored to Harper: punk-blues "Blues Coalition Government" which will soon become a classic concert where Charlie is fun harmonica. The next track "Speed" co-authored Gibbs / Harper rebooste all of its speed as its name suggests! To conclude the event Alvin Gibbs, it is illustrated on an acoustic cover of Mott The Hoople "Angel of Eighth Avenue" where he almost makes us forget the original so it is appropriate. Just gorgeous! Always singing and unplugged, he co-starring Jamie Oliver heady and mesmerizing "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." Finally, besides the written several titles, Charlie Harper has still made no less than eight alone! All quality, some stand out. "Wreckin'Ball" by British blues boom sounding side of "I Wish You Would" or "Not Fade Away" stonien. "Souls From Hell" which can be considered the little brother of "Tomorrows Girls" 1979 supported by his harmonica. "Higher Tide" or crossing a Johnny Cash and maritime folk. Or the melancholic "Stormy Day". Finally, the folk-blues "Little Black Crow" recalling the recent vinyl single released by his solo project Charlie's Harbour Rats. Anyway, Charlie Harper is like a good wine, it's better over time! It is also a little grandfather that we would like to have ... He deserves his place in the Pantheon of Rock alongside Iggy Pop, Lemmy Kilmister and Joey Ramone! With "XXIV," the UK SUBS come somehow out their "Sandinista! ". An ambitious and eclectic album that surprised, impressed, and the best part of their long discography. The more you listen, the more you appreciate it! Hopefully the group will not hurt piochera securities for inclusion in future setlists sometimes considered predictable by their side best of. Ozzyludo for Mine fanzine (www.fanzine-lamine.com)"

26/03/2013: Yet another great review of XXIV
The great reviews for XXIV keep rolling in, this time it's in the Italian online magazine Distorsioni. You can read the original article HERE and a translation below:
"There would be two ways to review a new album official UK Subs - the twenty-fourth to be exact as the title - both discounted when the editor is no longer a boy just a spring chicken, twenty-seven years at the time of the output two milestones in the discography of the band's frontman Charlie Harper and sixty-eight of the first wave of British punk, "Another Kind Of Blues" (1979) and "Crash Course" (1980). The first is to dismiss it in two words: "I am 37 years that we need the same soup punk heated but expect the UK Subs and the white-haired Charlie to pull the oars in the boat?". The second, politically correct punk, would be to emphasize the incredible consistency of a steel man - Charlie Harper - who has never sold the music business, a true guru punk without blemish, that has always been torn down the barriers between its life and hard-nosed music that continues to preach on stages around the world, along with three boys much younger than him and damn shot, Jet almond-shaped eyes (guitar), Alvin Gibbs (bass), Jamie Oliver (drums).
After hearing and listened to "XXIV" and vibrato with him, we just have to attestarci without hesitation the second mode, granted certain you want, but there is one that seems more authentic. The hardness, the blessed wall of sound of hardcore punk version of the UK Subs Third Millennium, 2013, and the song titles speak unequivocally of a fidelity moving - dramatically out of time only in appearance - the cause of A black circled in black, the clenched fist in red, and those who are most subordinates: Workers Revolution, Black Power Salute, Implosion 77, Failed State, Blues Coalition Government, authentic sonic punch in the stomach, are likely to be much alive, to be bearers of marginalization and the social breakdown of hard years in which to sow the victims and drain the soul is a planetary crisis economic, environmental and political. "A punk band playing the blues" can be read in their Facebook profile info: and of course, the old punk withdraws out his in the hot garage blues harmonica Blues Coalition Government (but case does Italy, heck of a Charlie?) and blows the dust away angrily.
At the end of 77 then appear Implosion - I swear! - The violins, it is strange but their unnatural coupling with the guitar noise-issima Jet is not bad. It did not end here: the deluxe edition of "XXIV", after fourteen songs that have shaken and strained - but with a luxurious enjoyment - our ears, electric guitars disappear and the four pull out twelve unexpected 'bonus acoustic tracks ', composing and singing a bit' all. Acoustic punk, folk punk? Yes, guitars and heart, because the songs still bear titles uncomfortable, restless and protesters as Stop Global War Souls From Hell, Sleeping Rough, The Outsider, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Hear the old Charlie, a kind of new dylan punk, apostrophe powerful bottom of his wisdom indie dean is something that is good for the heart. Then two lovely cover: the Dylan Angel of Eighth Avenue Ian Hunter / Allen and Ian Tyson Four Strong Wind. Well, if subversive of the UK wanted to surprise us, they did it great, this demonstration of versatility as an artist can not only enhance the aura of worship around them: will there be dinosaurs but at that!"

I only hope I've done it justice and whetted your appetite enough to convince you that one of the albums of the year is with us and and its name is 'XXIV' and to put it simply it's an absolute killer and you'd be a bit of a mug not to rush out and get involved because this shit is essential! Next album 'XXIV' - Captain Oi! Update Number 1
INITIAL PLANS REVEALED FOR NEW ALBUM...
The good Captain Mark Brennan (Captain Oi! supremo), who provided Time & Matter with regular updates on the last album 'Work In Progress' will again be keeping us all 'in the loop', as the much anticipated next Subs album 'XXIV' goes into post recording planning. Already assigned a catalogue number, AHOY 315, Mark has confirmed that the initial release will be a double CD album, in a delux clamshell box (like the recent Complete Punk Singles Collection), with the usual high quality booklet and a surprise freebie. This should be released by the end of September 2012, with the mixing of the album starting on 20th August and artwork plans being worked on. This initial double CD will be one disc 'electric' and one disc 'acoustic', and be limited to a maximum of 1,500 and after that is sold, the CD album will be made available as a single disc of the 'electric' songs only and come out as a digipak. Upon the album's CD release, Captain Oi! plan to release a vinyl version of the 'electric' songs ONLY, and will initially press 500 copies, with some limited colour vinyl being a part of that run, just as they did with the 'Work In Progress' vinyl release, which is now completely sold out. There are also plans afoot to possibly release a 7" vinyl single.

Next album 'X' - Day 5 picture and album title news!
The UK Subs are currently at Pat Collier's studio in London recording their new 'X' album. Today's photo, courtesy of Jet's Facebook page shows Charlie recording vocals, with Jet commenting that he is recording "a few more rhythm guitar tracks later"... click the image to enlarge. Recording is going particularly well, with 15 tracks ready for the main album, and a further 3 already sorted for the acoustic album. However, the band have shelved plans for the new release to be a triple album, especially as the band ASIA, have just released an album entitled 'XXX'. Therefore the band have decided to drop the Triple X three disc idea, which would have included a live disc or DVD, and will now release it as a double CD. As the new double album will be the band's 24th official album, the new title is to be XXIV, which is the roman numeral for 24.
Time & Matter will publish the 15 track titles for the new album over the weekend 21-22 July...
The UK Subs are currently at ex-Vibrators' bassist Pat Collier's Perry Vale Studio in London recording their eagerly awaited follow up to 2011s brilliant 'Work In Progress'. Provisionally entitled 'XXX', or triple X, the plan is for a new album of songs, an album of acoustic covers and a live CD or DVD. Interestingly, work has already begun on the acoustic set, with Jamie revealing that they are some way ahead of schedule.
Time & Matter will keep you bang up to date with all the latest from the studio over the next couple of weeks whilst the band are recording their next album for Captain Oi! Records.
Today we have some more photos (via Jet's and Jamie's Facebook pages) of the recording process. Above right is a picture by Jamie on day 3 (18/7/12), from inside the recording booth, which he tweeted with the comment: "drums and bass all done and some rhythm guitars too!" To the left is a photo of Jamie recording the drums on day 3, taken by Jet.
Right is a photo of Jet's guitar, which he posted after another guitar track had been completed on day 4, and below left is a photo of Jet, again from day 4, of which he commented on Facebook with "recording rhythm guitars! Is Alvin sleeping while I'm working hard?!" Below right is a picture by Jamie with the comment "Way ahead of schedule so we're starting on the acoustic songs!" Click images to enlarge.

The UK Subs entered the recording studio today to start recording their much anticipated 'XXX' album. This will be the second album recorded by the long established line-up of Charlie, Jet, Alvin and Jamie. The band will once again be utilising the excellent Perry Vale Studios in south east London, which belongs to the original Vibrators bass player Pat Collier, who recorded and produced the critically acclaimed last UK Subs studio album 'Work In Progress'.
The new album will be the band's 16th studio album of new material and their 24th official album, all of which have been named in alphabetical order since their 'A' debut recorded just over 33 years ago! The picture to the right was taken by Yuko, and the two below by Jet. The first being Jet's final arrangements for new songs on his home PC, taken on 15th June, the day before entering the studio, and the second being from today, with the band setting up their gear in preperation. Next album 'XXX' songwriting progress report
T&M co-webmaster Mark recently spoke to all four band members about their individual preparations for the forthcoming recording of the eagerly anticipated next album – to be entitled ‘XXX’.
Jamie enthused that he already has “almost four complete songs, music wise anyway. I only have a working title for one of them though, and the idea is for it to be about people who say they'll stick by you but then bail out on you when it really comes to the crunch. That one I think will be called 'Suicide Pact (You First)'. As for the others I will leave it down to Charlie to name."
Jet also has four songs in the melting pot, and he is “currently re-arranging these at the moment”, but added that “one song is done.” Jet also stated that he “never uses working titles. I just use ‘track 1’, ‘track 2’ etc, so there are no song titles yet...”
Alvin was just as animated by the prospect of following up the critically acclaimed last album ‘Work In Progress’ and has completed two songs, both music and lyrics, in preparation already. The first song is entitled ‘Thunder’ which Alvin thinks he “would like to do the vocals on”, as the subject matter is Alvin’s “personal perspective on the life of Johnny Thunders”, of the New York Dolls. Alvin’s second track promises to be of immense interest as well, with its striking title and fascinating subject matter.
“Black Power Salute” concerns the African American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving their famous salute after they won the 200 metre gold and bronze medals respectively at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. The event was one of the most overtly political statements in the history of the modern Olympic Games. Smith later stated in his autobiography that the salute was not a Black Power salute, but in fact a human rights salute. On the medals podium, Smith and Carlos both wore ‘Olympic Project for Human Rights’ badges, receiving their medals shoeless, but wearing black socks, to represent black poverty. Smith wore a black scarf around his neck to represent black pride and Carlos had his tracksuit top unzipped to show solidarity with all blue collar workers in the U.S. also wearing a necklace of beads which he described "were for those individuals that were lynched, or killed and that no-one said a prayer for, that were hung and tarred. It was for those thrown off the side of the boats in the middle passage…”
Charlie was also very excited about the next album, telling T&M that "the Subs are in a 'born again' frame of mind after 'Work In Progress'! It was a powerful record with a great variety of sound and song composition. I see the 'Work In Progress' album as our first album and X as the 'Brand New Age' of today, with it being even more exciting, with better arranged songs and a step forward in every way." Charlie is currently busy formulating lyrics and music for the album, although he didn't reveal any working song titles, but further added that he had "...heard Alvin's songs and they are very good. The bar is set, and it's very high." Of the additional discs planned for the 'triple X' album Charlie also divulged that "...I must add that the acoustic CD will be very surprising!"
These are obviously very exciting days for the Subs and their fans alike, and as previously reported in our first 'XXX' news story, the band are scheduled to go into Pat Collier’s studio in London in July, for what is already sounding like it has the potential to be an even bigger classic U.K. Subs album than the last!

Next U.K. Subs album planned: XXX
Following on from the tremendous success and critical acclaim for the band's last album 'Work In Progress', T&M can report that plans are currently in place to record the eagerly awaited follow up from the Charlie Harper / Jet / Alvin Gibbs / Jamie Oliver line-up. The album will again be released by Captain Oi! Records, and the band are looking to go into Pat Collier's studio (where 'Work In Progress' was recorded in 2010), hopefully in July 2012. The album, to be titled 'XXX', but generally called 'triple X' will indeed... be a triple disc release on its initial CD format. The main disc will be the new studio album, with the second disc being an acoustic album, a first for the Subs, consisting of one-third new songs, one-third old Subs songs and the final third being covers, of which one looks like being 'Angel Of Eighth Avenue', a Mott The Hoople song. There is also talk of a song being sung in Japanese by Jet! The third disc will be a live CD compilation or possibly a DVD, probably containing some gig footage and some behind-the-scenes tour footage. U.K. Subs: XXX will most probably be released in the fabulous CLAMSHELL box which Captain Oi! have successfully used for their recent U.K. SUBS: Complete Punk Singles Collection & Skids: The Singles Collection 1978-1981 CD releases. More news when we get it folks!
This album was originally going to be entitled X Subs (see footage below)
