28/12: SUPERB ALVIN GIBBS SINGLE REVIEW ON FEAR & LOATHING WEBSITE

The ever-brilliant Fear & Loathing website, run and written by Andy P has published a superb review of Alvin's debut single...

"...a taster for his upcoming album and if they’re anything to go by, it’s going to be great... Alvin's vocals are powerful and emotive. His musical pedigree will no doubt ensure that this limited edition sells quickly, but it certainly deserves to be heard on its’ own merits..."

Thanks to Andy P for the fab words...

13/12: 'SCREAMING SENILE' E.P. MAILING LIST UPDATE

ALL COPIES TO BE SENT OUT UNSIGNED

The latest update on the U.K. Subs E.P. 'Screaming Senile' has been sent out via the official mailing list from Jamie and reads as follows:

Screaming Senile update.

Hi folks, Jamie here again. Well, the Screaming Senile vinyl has finally arrived, FINALLY!!!! This time around it's actually been a very frustrating process and we've been let down a number of times with regards to deadlines and stuff, even the effing delivery was late!
The records were supposed to be delivered on Friday ready for us to sign on Saturday ahead of our gig in Derby, and then sent to our shipper ready to be then sent to you. However, they didn't show up until yesterday (Tuesday) so unfortunately our tour has now finished, Alvin is back in France, Charlie is back in Brighton, Steve up North in Sunderland and I'm in the Midlands, meaning it's going to be nigh on impossible for us to get together to sign them before shipping, unless we wait another month which we don't want to do. We want to get them out to you now (NOW DAMMIT!) so you have them in time for Christmas.
So yes, I'm afraid all copies will have to come unsigned, but we just want to let you know that you can come to any of our gigs at any time and we will be more than happy to sign the records for you, each and every one of them. We're truly sorry if this has let any of you down, I know we said we'd sign them like we did the last two campaigns, but it's either that or have you wait another month before you get your items.
So to give you a rough shipping schedule, I'm sending the records to our shipper tomorrow, he's on tour until Monday, and then shipping should start on Tuesday/Wednesday next week. All items will be sent out on a 48hr tracked delivery service so your items should definitely all be with you in time for Christmas!!
Apologies once again for the delays. If anybody has any questions by the way, feel free to respond to any of these emails and I'll get back to you right away!
Oh, and before I forget, the vinyls look lush!!!!
See you soon, Jamie

10/12: STEVE ROBERTS RELEASES BOOK OF MEMOIRS

Ex-U.K. Subs drummer Steve Roberts, who now goes by the name of Stevie ZeSuicide, has released a book of his memoirs entitled 'Rock & Roll Chronicles', it was published on paperback on 3 December 2018. Edited by Mike Harris and running to 162 pages, the promotional information reads as follows:

"Not just another rock & roll autobiography - during time off away from gigs Stevie worked in a music video studio where he met, and conversed, with many top-line celebrities. This book is a mix of events in the life of a rock musician mixed with his time as a 'backroom boy' on set with many not-to-be-missed anecdotes. Stevie played as a member of UK Subs, making several Top of the Pops appearances. He also performed with The Damned and The Exploited - in the studio and on the road. He was used by Simon Cowell as a session drummer for Sinitta on TV appearances. Working behind the scenes on many music video productions Stevie gathered a wealth of first-hand stories from the many world famous celebrities he met and looked after... Sir Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Freddie Mercury and Monserrat Cabalié, AC/DC, KISS and more..."

The book is published via Stevie ZeSuicide's management company TaM* Entertainment and you can view a short promotional video HERE.

10/12: FABULOUS ALVIN GIBBS INTERVIEW ON DEVOLUTION WEBSITE

Ahead of Alvin Gibbs & The Disobedient Servants' stunning debut album being released on Time & Matter Records in the new year, Alvin has given a fascinating and fabulous interview to Devolution Magazine's Mark Bestford, in which he talks about the process of making his debut solo recordings and much more...
The interview is now published online, the link being below
...

Devolution Interview: Alvin Gibbs
“I actually surprise myself when I look back and think my god, how did I get away with that”

"...all the feedback on the single so far has been very good, because it’s been played on radio and podcasts and things like that and everyone who’s heard it has come back and said it sounds great. It’s exciting, it’s nice to have something at this late stage in my career to have something new to quicken me and excite me. Not that I don’t get that from the Subs, I love the Subs, I love playing with the Subs. We’ve just done an EP which will be released in November. I love doing all that, but it’s kind of fun when you’re in control and it’s your own thing, and you can make the decisions really. There’s something liberating about that too...”

09/12: SUPERB ALVIN GIBBS SINGLE REVIEW ON RPM WEBSITE

The RPM website, run and written by Dom Daley has published a superb review of Alvin's debut single...

'Ghost Train' "...sounds like the finest bit of punk rock n roll Iggy never wrote..."

'Clumsy Fingers' "...is spectacular and has Alvin’s motoring bass line that really attacks your core. Now if Guns n Rose were to announce a new single and they played this on the radio there would be a collective wetting of gentlemen’s undercrackers and the magazines would be clamoring over themselves to tell you how good it is so with a bonkers solo from the one and only Brian James to boot..."

03/12: 'SCREAMIMG SENILE' E.P. MAILING LIST UPDATE

The latest update on the U.K. Subs E.P. 'Screaming Senile' has been sent out via the official mailing list from Jamie and reads as follows:

"Finally!!!!

Hi folks,

I've just received an email informing us that the Screaming Senile records are being shipped out to us tomorrow! Hoorayyyy!!! Once they arrive (should be before the weekend), we will get them signed and sent to our shipper to get out to you ASAP along with all of your other items. We cannot apologise enough for the delays but we're getting there!

The delays have been a general supply and demand problem with vinyl pressing plants across the board. To give you a little bit of history, in the 1980's the vinyl market was basically killed off with the introduction of the CD, forcing many vinyl pressing plants to close. In the East, however, it took some time to catch up and the CD didn't take its grip on the market for quite a number of years, meaning that a lot of the old Eastern Block pressing plants were still in tact and able to function. Fast forward to today where the vinyl market is bigger than ever before and it's easy to see why pressing plants aren't able to keep up - there just aren't that many people making vinyl anymore, and with things like record store day, people are just buying records in their hoards. So, with demand so high and supply limited to the capacity of the plants, there is a huge backlog and the vinyl pressing market is unfortunately riddled with delays.

Anyway that's enough yapping. We're so glad to finally be able to give you some good news!!!

Standby for further updates.

Jamie"

22/11: STOKE GIG CANCELLED - BAND STATEMENT ISSUED

Dear Stoke,
We regret to announce that we will not be appearing tonight at the Eleven Music Venue as advertised.
On Monday evening we became aware that one of the supports bands may have right wing associations. In order to make a clear and well informed judgement on the most appropriate course of action, we took the time to research whether this was in fact true. We found that in the past the band had members of a now infamous right wing band whose name we won’t mention.
We aren’t going to argue the semantics of whether the band in question are or aren’t a right wing band, they very well may not be. However, to our level of satisfaction, we were not convinced the band had proactively attempted to dissociate themselves from their former right-wing members, or other individuals/organisations who closely identify with the politics and ideologies of their former right-wing members. Therefore, we presented the promoter with an ultimatum - us or them. He chose them.
And so it’s unfortunate but we have to stick to our guns on this one.
UK Subs are an anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-political extremist band, and on this we could not be clearer. We encourage others to offer the same kind of clarity.
Charlie, Alvin, Steve and Jamie

20/11: LAUNCH PARTY MAILING LIST UPDATE

The latest update on the forthcoming launch party for the brand new U.K. Subs E.P. 'Screaming Senile' has been sent out via the official mailing list from Jamie and reads as follows:

EP launch party details!

Hi folks!

We are now just 2 days from launching our brand new EP and this is just to give you some more details about the show. So this time around, we have worked out a muuuuch better system for ticketing which *should* make everything run a lot faster and smoother than previously.

All you need to do is present a copy of the email to the door staff, you can have it on your smartphone or if you don't have a smartphone you can print it out, and we will have an app that scans your barcode and then you will be granted entry. It should be really simple, so hopefully, *fingers crossed* we should have no problems at all.

So the doors will be opening around 7.30pm, we should be kicking the gig off at 8.30pm sharp. I wanted to leave enough time to get everybody in and make sure everyone is comfortable before we get going. Today we had a really good rehearsal at our friend's place up near Blackpool, and I can tell you we are so excited for this gig, it just feels great to be switching things up and playing something completely different from the norm.

We have been having some issues with our website which has been down for a few days now.

Thankfully our web guys have been on it and it's all back up and running now, so if you still need to buy tickets you can do so by going to www.uksubs.co.uk

Ok then guys, that's all for now. Here's a photo from today's rehearsal. See you on Wednesday!!

Another rehearsal done today in preparation for our EP launch party tomorrow night! We never rehearse so it’s good to be practicing some of the old singles that we’ve never played before. Can’t wait for tomorrow now!!!

19/11: NEW E.P. ARTWORK & TRACK LISTING

Ahead of the forthcoming brand new U.K. Subs E.P. 'Screaming Senile' launch party gig in Nuneaton on 21 November (tickets HERE), the artwork is reproduced below, revealing also the full 5 track titles...

The band have previously announced that one of the tracks would be an updated, re-recording of their 1981 single 'Keep On Running (Til You Burn)'; now re-titled 'Keep On Running 2018' and have also recently made the opening track 'Hounds At The Door' available on audio at:

https://gallery.mailchimp.com/58786b0c6cfbc86b88de98af8/files/83563190-4338-4630-ad73-969f846da547/Hounds_at_the_Door.mp3

The other new tracks are 'Geordie Ray' - which boasts Jamie Oliver playing guitar, 'Crank It Up' - featuring Alvin Gibbs on vocals, and '2000 Years'.

The above artwork is from the Crowconut website of the graphic designer Beka Pritchards which includes more basic images that went into creating the cover as a whole:

"...The artwork is a collage of illustrations, layered and eroded to produce this glitchy effect..."

14/11: NEW E.P. LAUNCH GIG PROMO VIDEO

The band have posted a 36 second promotional video for the forthcoming brand new U.K. Subs E.P. 'Screaming Senile' launch party gig in Nuneaton on 21 November (tickets HERE)

Below is a screen shot of the video, which can be viewed exclusively on the band's official Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/UKSubs/

The following text appeared with the video:
"...Just one week to go until our EP launch party at the Queens Hall in Nuneaton. You will not want to miss this night!! Tickets still available at www.uksubs.co.uk
Let’s make this a night to remember!!!
Big thanks to the lovely Beka Pritchards at Crowconut for this video!!!"

13/11: SUBVERSIONS 2 BEING RECORDED?

A temporary video has been posted to the band's official Instagram account, showing brief footage of a track being recorded at Pat Collier's studio in London, where the band have recorded all their recent albums and singles for the last few years. Entitled 'Subversions 2', the video has since been taken down.

It therefore looks as if the band are already recording a follow-up to their well received all-covers album of earlier this year entitled Subversions, which was commissioned by Cleopatra Records in the USA.

07/11: NEW E.P. MAILING LIST UPDATE

The latest update on the forthcoming brand new U.K. Subs E.P. 'Screaming Senile' has been sent out via the official mailing list from Jamie and reads as follows:

Screaming Senile is nearly here!

Hi folks!

Well it's November and we've just returned from a very successful West Coast USA tour with Agent Orange and Guttermouth. It was a hell of a lot of fun and we're still recovering from severe jet lag but there's no rest for the wicked and we're kicking off our UK Christmas tour tonight in Nottingham. So, without further yapping, it's about time we gave you an update to let you all know exactly where we are and how things are going.

Firstly, let's start off with a very minor bit of bad news. The vinyl records are unfortunately going to be ever so slightly delayed. I spoke to the pressing plant and they said they will likely be with us about a week after the launch show but they're doing everything they can to get the records out to us as soon as humanly possible and then we will sign them and get everything out to you right away. Apologies for this minor delay but we promise it will all be with you very very soon!

On a much more positive note, attached to this email is a link for one of the tracks. We hope you like it! Written by Mr. Steve Straughan, 'Hounds at the Door' offers a catchy slice of punk rock energy. This is just a taste of what's to come and we hope it will wet your appetite! Just click here to listen!! (https://gallery.mailchimp.com/58786b0c6cfbc86b88de98af8/files/83563190-4338-4630-ad73-969f846da547/Hounds_at_the_Door.mp3)

Tickets for the launch party at the Queens Hall in Nuneaton on November 21st are selling well and if you missed the memo, we will be performing two unique sets. The first will be an acoustic set comprised of two songs written and performed by each member of the band. As you know, we each have our own solo projects going on and we thought it'd be interesting to offer something entirely different from the norm. The second set, which we're extremely excited about, will be made completely of UK Subs 7" singles. We're talking songs that haven't been played by the band in a very very long time, some never played live before (we'll leave it to you to speculate). There'll also be some surprises along the way, with one major surprise you will not want to miss!!! This is probably going to be one of the most interesting UK Subs gigs in a long time, certainly in recent years and we hope you'll join us for yet another wonderful night in 'Sunny Nunny'. We sent out your e-tickets for the gig yesterday (Wednesday). If you've bought a ticket but haven't received a confirmation email already, check your junk mail folder first and if it's still not there then please respond to this email and I will check it for you.

And finally, in true disorganised punk rock fashion, I've just realised that I neglected to update the images for the Screaming Senile shirts and badges. What an idiot! This is now done and you can see on our website how it all looks! See the links below :)

Ok everyone, happy Thursday and I'll be in touch very soon with another update!
Cheers!

Jamie

24/10: NEW E.P. LAUNCH PARTY GIG UPDATE

The latest update on the forthcoming brand new U.K. Subs E.P. 'Screaming Senile' to be posted on the band's Facebook page from Jamie reads as follows:

Hi all,
On November 21st we will hold our third annual release party at the Queens Hall in Nuneaton. For these unique events we perform an extra special set or series of sets, offering something completely different from the norm. The first year, we performed 3 sets - an acoustic Subs set, songs from the Ziezo lineup and a classic subs set. Last time we performed one song from each successive U.K. Subs album from A to Z and an impromptu set after the mics had been taken down from the stage!
This time, we’ll kick off the night with acoustic songs from each of our respective solo projects. The main set, however, will be comprised of U.K. Subs 7” singles. Some will not have been played by the band in years, some probably never heard live before and there’ll be some surprises along the way, with one big surprise that we are extremely excited about!
In addition to kicking off the release of our brand new EP ‘Screaming Senile’, this promises to be one of the most interesting Subs gigs in a very long time and we look forward to sharing this special night with you all.
Tickets for this unique event are available from our webshop at:

22/10: EX-SUB RICKY McGUIRE NEWS

Ex-U.K. Subs bassist Ricky McGuire, now a long-time member of The Men They Couldn't Hang - who have just released an absolutely stunningly brilliant new album entitled 'Cock-A-Hoop' - is also currently involved in an exciting new album project with prolific UK-based songwriter  Rich Ragany.

Described by Vive Le Rock magazine as "...one of the country’s most engaging frontmen..." Ragany (pictured right) has written, recorded and released 3 full length albums in the last three years alone with London power-pop combo Role Models, with their last album "Dance Moves" making the aforementioned influential magazine's Top 50 albums of the year at number 25.

This new album will be Ragany's first solo album, entitled
"Like We'll Never Make It", with the new band being
'Rich Ragany And The Digressions'

Having recently run a successful Pledge Music campaign, with 5% of the goal target and 5% of the post-goal funds being donated to charity, this new album will be worth checking out.

Afterwards the album will be handled by GLUNK Records.

17/10: ALVIN GIBBS FEATURE IN RECORD COLLECTOR

Alvin Gibbs features in the latest edition of Record Collector magazine - November 2018 (issue 485), answering a few questions, ahead on the release of his debut solo single and LP.
The article, on page 47, is in the magazine's regular section called 'Talking Heads'.

Also in this issue, on page 8, in the 'News' section, under the heading 'Friendly society - Upcoming album guest appearances', Alvin is mentioned again, as there's a list of the 9 guest appearances on his forthcoming album on T&M.

14/10: ALVIN GIBBS INTERVIEW WITH RPM ONLINE

Ahead of his brilliant debut solo single and LP being released on Time & Matter Records, Alvin has given a fantastic interview to the brand new website RPM online, which has been set up by Dom Daley, one of the fabulous writers who contributed to the Uber Rock website.
You can read all about Alvin's solo projects plus much more about Alvin and the U.K. Subs besides...

"...it’s been liberating in a way as I’ve not been worried about writing in a certain way or style. You’re writing for yourself you know so I’m not tailoring it for the U.K. Subs. It enables me to write songs I wouldn’t bring to the Subs so yeah it’s allowed me to have a diverse range which I hope people will like. There’s a dark almost Nick Cave style song and some that would be the opposite side of the spectrum more in a style like the New York Dolls. So yeah it’s been a great process and I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s a lot of hard work..."

The forthcoming double coloured vinyl album release includes the original 20 tracks best of tracks complied by Charlie, as well as 8 of the 18 live tracks that were the bonus CD disc on initial release, being a live gig in Bristol from 1991.

The press release from Jungle reads as follows:

01/09: ALVIN GIBBS INTERVIEW ON SPANISH WEBSITE

The novacronica.com/ website has just published an excellent interview with Alvin Gibbs
Andrés Gator is the founder and editor of Nova Crónica (music magazine). He designs, writes for, and maintains the site. Usually, Nova Crónica is a one-man operation.

The articles are in both Spanish and English, so please show your support for this excellent D.I.Y. endeavour and give it a read, you'll get to learn more about Alvin's fabulous forthcoming debut LP on Time & Matter Records as well as various thoughts about his musical journey with the U.K. Subs:

"I resisted the idea of a solo record for a long time but a lot of people in recent years said to me they would very much like to hear an album of my songs so I eventually warmed to the idea..."

"My signature bass for many years was the Gibson Thunderbird. This was the instrument of choice when I played with the Subs, Iggy Pop and Cheap ‘n’ Nasty..."

"My abiding memories of that early period were seeing the Ramones play in my home town of Croydon in 1977, which was a life altering experience, and getting down to the Roxy Club to see the Clash and Generation X, during that same glorious year..."

"Charlie and I both essentially like the same music and have the same approaches to songwriting so it’s easy for us to co-write together..."

31/08: ALVIN GIBBS SOLO PROJECT UPDATE NUMBER 4

As previously reported on this website, Time & Matter Records will be releasing U.K. Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs' debut solo single and album.

Alvin has today posted an update to his Facebook page, as follows...

"Update on solo album # 2…

So Facebookers, a post to apprise you all on what’s a happening regarding the state of play for my forthcoming solo LP entitled, Your Disobedient Servant, and the advance single release, Ghost Train.

Regarding the album, I’ve now had my concluding two contributors to the project add their parts to a duo of prime tracks – the guitar supremo Mick Rossi of the superb Slaughter and the Dogs, who has deeply enhanced a spirited track entitled As Deep As Our Skin with his Ronson-esque rhythm and lead playing; plus the award winning, celebrated film soundtrack composer and audio designer Mel Wesson who has skilfully augmented a Nick Cave-style gothic composition of mine into something yet more sinister and atmospheric with an excellent piano performance and some enriching sound motifs.

Thus, Mick Rossi and Mel Wesson’s names can now be added to the list of Disobedient Servants who have augmented my album during the recording process, a roll call of talent that includes Leigh Heggarty of Ruts DC; ex-Damned, Lords of the New Church guitarist Brian James; ex-Generation X and present Chelsea guitarists, James Stevenson; Barry ‘Barrington’ Francis of the Saints; ex-Johnny Thunders, Cheap ‘n’ Nasty and extant axe player for the Peckham Cowboys, Timo Kaltio; six string stylist Steve Crittall of the Godfather; and my partner in rhythm for the UK Subs, Jamie Oliver, who adeptly provided the drums for all twelve tracks. Upon finishing the recording phase, my co-producer Steve Crittall and I then mixed the entire album, which has now been sent for mastering by Time and Matter Records, thereafter to be transformed into luscious coloured vinyl and CDs for release later this year.

And honestly, I’ve got to say, I’m really excited about how good this album has turned out and I’m very much looking forward to getting your feedback for what I firmly believe is a varied and worthy piece of work.

Concerning the single Ghost Train, I wish to sincerely thank all of you who have now pre-ordered it and, seeing as well over two-thirds of this limited edition coloured vinyl pressing has pre-sold already, I would strongly advise those who would still like to obtain one of these singles to do so before it becomes unavailable via the link below

30/08: ALVIN GIBBS SINGLE REVIEW IN DEVOLUTION MAGAZINE

Massive thanks to Mark Bestford for his glowing review of the forthcoming Alvin Gibbs debut solo single on the https://devolutionmagazine.co.uk/ website:

"If these two tracks are indicative of what we can expect to see on the album then you won’t be disappointed, and we can expect a rare moment in punk history. There have been punk collaborations before, but none quite so grand in scale, and with such rich history.
It’s a fantastic piece of music..."

26/08: BAND REQUEST FOR VIDEO CLIPS

Jamie has put out a request via Facebook and e-mail for video contributions from Subs fans for a forthcoming video:

"UK SUBS
Published by Jamie Oliver · 25 August at 13:57 ·
Hi guys,
Bit of a weird one here but for an experimental video idea we need short video clips of people screaming.
Here’s what we need:
1. Video shot in landscape, not portrait.
2. A range of different angles i.e., from the front, side, looking up from below the chin, looking down from the left and right etc.
3. We need the video to be shot with the person standing against a plain background, it doesn’t matter what colour, as long as the place is fairly well lit.
4. You can do whatever you want as long as the person is screaming, the videos don’t all need to be shaking their heads. Just make it look mental!!! (Arse scratching is optional)
All will be revealed very soon but to get involved please email your clip as soon as possible to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
This should be fun!!!!"

17/08: NEW EP RECORDED - TO BE CALLED 'SCREAMING SENILE'

The band have sent out news via their mailing list announcing that their forthcoming EP is recorded and will be named 'Screaming Senile'.

The update read as follows:

"EP update #2

Hi all!
Apologies for the lack of updates recently, we have all been busy with our side-projects and other fun things. However, you'll be glad to know that last week we went into the studio to record the EP! This is how it went...
The EP is done!
Following the inevitable drunken melee that was Rebellion Festival and still feeling the effects of copious amounts of alcohol, tired and hungover we went back to Perry Vale Studios in London to see our old mate Pat Collier. We laid down the 5 tracks as promised in 3 days and we are really very happy with the results. And we can tell you that Pat has once again outdone himself in the production department. Except this time the sound is almost less polished, much rawer, faster, louder, harder! So yes, our work in the studio is complete, we can proceed with bringing this campaign to its conclusion, and what's more is, we have a title!
After much deliberation and perusing your suggestions submitted through our website, we have finally reached a conclusion on what the name should be. We'd like to thank you all for your submissions, there were some really great ones - and some, erm, not so great ones - but nevertheless, we really appreciate you all getting involved and being part of what we view as the greatest period of the UK Subs since the old days.
SO, without further ado, the title of our brand new EP will be 'SCREAMING SENILE'. This title, which we LOVE was suggested by our competition winner in America, who just goes by the name of 'Punk Jeff'. Congratulations Punk Jeff, check your email because we have a special prize for you!
So this means we can now put the EP into production, we can start getting the artwork together and send off the tracks for mastering and start getting everything on its way to you. There's still a loooong way to go but exciting times!
So once again a massive massive thanks for all of your support, it really does mean a lot to us all. That's all for now, we'll be in touch again soon with more news. If you have any questions or comments you can just reply to this email and I'll do my best to get back to you and help where possible.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Jamie"

12/08: ALVIN GIBBS SOLO PROJECT UPDATE NUMBER 3

As previously reported on this website, Time & Matter Records will be releasing U.K. Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs' debut solo single and album.

Alvin has today posted an update to his Facebook page, as follows...

"OK Facebook chums, having freshly returned from the wondrous occasion that is the Rebellion Festival – which was as enjoyable and liver corroding as ever – I thought I’d offer an update on my solo recording project. Firstly, Time & Matter records are now taking pre-orders for my solo 7 inch coloured vinyl single that will be posted to your place of abode in October of this year.

Each hand numbered piece will feature cover art work by Gaye Black, formerly Gaye Advert, original bassist for the legendary first-wave punk band, the Adverts; and the guitar styling’s of Leigh Heggarty of the mighty Ruts DC on the A-side (Ghost Train), and ex-Damned, Lords of the New Church prodigy Brian James, on the G-side (Clumsy Fingers) – see what T & M have done there folks, A-side, G-side, Alvin Gibbs… get it?!!

There will be only 300 singles available so it might be advisable to pre-order now via this link before the limited pressing is no longer obtainable:

Secondly, the album, Your Disobedient Servant, is close to being finished – just another name guitarist to play on one remaining track followed by the mixing process and then mastering and sending off to the manufacturers in good time and order for an early December release.

I can reveal that as well as Brian James and Leigh Heggarty, ex-Generation X, and present Chelsea guitarists, James Stevenson, contributes some fine work to 2 tracks on my LP, while Barry ‘Barrington’ Francis of the Saints and my old touring/recording buddy from my stint with the band Cheap ‘n’ Nasty, Timo Kaltio, both grace a song apiece too; plus some sterling guitar work from my co-producer Steve Crittall, who usually employs his axe to great effect with the Godfathers.

I thank you all. X  "

Archived Yuko section only is below:

"11. THE QUIET RIOT
Yuko, Tokyo
Like the eye of the storm, this character is a point of calm amongst the chaos. She’s no soft-touch, though: Yuko’s piercing gaze goes right through us as if to say she’s got no time for posers or bullsh*t.
“I’m married to [legendary vocalist] Charlie Harper and working for [his band] UK Subs! I’m from just outside Tokyo, but have been living in the UK for over 18 years now. I’m kind of here every year! The festival is so friendly, with a really warm feeling. I love to be able to go and see bands like The Adicts, but it’s also an opportunity to see your friends from all over the world in one place. A lot of my Japanese friends come over. It’s chaotic – but it’s a good chaos! And it’s good music!”

10/07: ALVIN GIBBS SOLO PROJECT UPDATE NUMBER 2

As announced on 29 April, Time & Matter Records have signed up U.K. Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs to release his debut solo album, with a release date pencilled in for December 2018.

Alvin has today posted up an update to his Facebook page, with the exciting news that Time & Matter Records - as a taster for the LP - will be issuing a limited edition 7" coloured vinyl single scheduled for a Halloween release date...

"Well, I quite honestly didn’t think I’d see England again make it to a World Cup Semi Final in my lifetime; but then again, I didn’t suppose I would ever record a solo album either. Now, remarkably, the former has happened and the latter is transpiring. After putting off the idea for a very long time due to the belief such an idea was conceited and audacious – despite my co-Sub and dear friend Charlie Harper and numerous others in the scene encouraging me to do so – Time and Matter Records have finally breached my reticence and I now find myself in the midst of recording an LP that I’m co-producing with my old mate and Godfathers’ guitarist, ‘Soho’ Steve Crittall.

There will be twelve spanking new self-penned songs for this project which will have the artist title ‘Alvin Gibbs and the Disobedient Servants’: the Disobedient Servants being the various guest musicians who have kindly agreed to contribute their playing on one or more tracks for the forthcoming record. Although I’m not going to reveal all the contributors for the present, I can assure you there is already a very cool line-up of guitar players who will enhance, or have already graced, my compositions with their skill and renowned individual styles.

Before this album (titled ‘Your Disobedient Servant’) is released there will be a taster of what is to come in the form of an individually numbered, limited edition 7 inch coloured vinyl single, complete with a printed insert sheet containing the contributing players’ credits and the lyrics so you can sing along with the tunes if you feel so inclined!

The single’s A-side, ‘Ghost Train', features some very fine guitar work from Leigh Heggarty of the mighty Ruts DC; while the B-side, ‘Clumsy Fingers’, has my old touring buddy from the 1970s, ex-Damned and Lords of the New Church guitarist Brian James, activating his six-string abilities for a blistering solo and some nice guitar flourishes throughout. I take the lead vocal duties for both the 7 inch compositions and the remainder of the album tracks; play some negligible guitar and, naturally, take care of all the bass parts. My fellow partner in rhythm for the U.K. Subs, Jamie Oliver, is responsible for the drums, while ‘Soho’ Steve deftly adds some additional guitar glue to the general mix.

The atmospheric artwork for the single (revealed above in its pure form without the titles in situ) is by Gaye Black – formerly known as Gaye Advert, one time bassist for the legendary first-wave Punk band the Adverts, and now a much rated and talented artist. Release dates for the single and album will follow shortly.

So there you have it FB chums. Although my focus remains, and will always remain, being a contributing member of the U.K. Subs, I will shortly emulate my fellow band mates by having a fully developed side-project to keep you all informed about too – Steve Straughan has his Hi-Fi Spitfires of course; Jamie Oliver has just made an album with his occasional band, You; and Charlie has been releasing solo records on-and-off for many years now.

I’ve really enjoyed writing and recording the songs for this venture and I’m very much looking forward to getting some feedback on them from you good people when these recordings become available for public consumption.
‘Till then, my dear friends, I remain Your Disobedient Servant."

Additionally, T&M would add that the 7" single will be hand-numbered and limited to 300 copies, it will be on coloured vinyl and include a two-sided printed insert and have the catalogue number of T&M 031...

More details to follow folks...

08/06: NEW EP ANNOUNCEMENT

The U.K. Subs have today sent out an announcement via e-mail to all fans registered with their uksubs.co.uk mailing list, as well as via their official Facebook page, that the band intend to record a brand new EP, set to be released in November 2018.

The announcement was made as follows:

"   ***MAJOR UK SUBS ANNOUNCEMENT!!!***

Hi all,

In August 2018 we will embark upon the recording of a new UK Subs project which will take the form of a brand new 5 track EP. As you will know, our previous two offerings were released in association with our friends at Pledge Music. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Pledge for all of their efforts throughout our last two (very successful) campaigns.
However, in the spirit of always striving to do something new and different, this time around we have decided to go it alone and put out the first ever fully independent release in the history of the UK Subs. We’ll be operating as our own record label ‘Subversive UK Records’, self-publishing, as well as handling every single aspect of the production, design, manufacture and delivery of the record from start to finish. We’ll even be dealing with customer questions and queries ourselves (and hopefully not too many complaints!)
It’s an exciting but daunting task and one that involves a hell of a lot of hard work and dedication from our side. But we feel this is the most DIY, most punk rock way we can bring new music to you without compromise. Ultimately though, we need your support more than ever. We are taking pre-sales via our secure online store at www.uksubs.co.uk/store. Once preordered, you will be added to a special exclusive mailing list which we’ll use to keep you in the loop with regular updates and exclusive content sent directly to your inbox, much like our previous campaigns. So what’s on offer? Well, due to the sheer scale of the project, we want to keep this release as simple as possible. Therefore, the EP, as of yet untitled, will come on a 12” splattered colour vinyl with a CD attached, limited to the duration of the campaign. For the vinyl purist, a black vinyl will also be available but won’t come with the CD. There will also be an exclusive Tshirt in a number of colour ways as well as an exclusive enamel badge, test pressings and all kinds of things. Plus of course we will have the official launch party at the Queens Hall, Nuneaton in November, which is always a riot!
We’re super excited for this project and we hope you will be too. Head over to www.uksubs.co.uk/store to check it all out.

Much love, Charlie, Alvin, Steve and Jamie."

28/05: U.K. SUBS PICTURED WITH ROBERT PLANT

The Subs have today posted the following picture on their Facebook page of themselves (minus Steve) with Led Zeppelin's legendary frontman Robert Plant... (click image to enlarge)

U.K. SUBS FACEBOOK: "UK Subs and Robert Plant this weekend. So much fun at Bearded Theory. Great end to the UK tour. Big thanks to all who made it out to see us!!"

ALVIN GIBBS' FACEBOOK PHOTO COMMENT: "Got a couple of tasty updates to share with you in the near future my dear Facebook chums but, firstly, wanted to thank everybody who attended our very enjoyable Spring UK tour which came to a blistering conclusion with two festival appearances this past weekend. The first of those gatherings, the wonderful Bearded Theory fest in Derbyshire, saw us share a stage with the likes of the Bermondsey Joyriders, Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Robert Plant and his band the Sensational Space Shifters (try saying that fast after you’ve had a couple of wines!). I’ve been lucky in getting to meet some musically influential prime movers over the years: got to hang out with Joey Ramone in New York when I was playing with Iggy Pop, conversed with both David Bowie and Alice Cooper during that same period; got shown around Abbey Road studios by Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople fame and stood shoulder-to-shoulder playing on stage with Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, among other notable encounters during my musical career. Meeting Robert Plant and discovering what an easy going and ego-free guy he was on Saturday was definitely up there too. Both Charlie Harper and I both got to see Led Zeppelin back in the day. Chas saw them play in a small pub in South London in 1969 – when Charlie told Plant this the singer recalled the name of the hostelry (the Toby Jug, apparently) and even where it was situated – while I caught them six years later at one of their Earls Court gigs… ‘oh, that was 1975’ said Robert ‘I’m afraid Alvin we were just going through the motions by then’ he revealed. His guitarist, Skin, was also a top bloke, as was the rest of his band to a man. Some of you may have already seen Jamie Oliver’s post featuring this pic, but for those who haven’t here’s a photographic memento of that joyful occasion."

13/05: ALVIN GIBBS SOLO LP UPDATE No.1

As announced on 29 April, Time & Matter Records have signed up U.K. Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs to release his debut solo album, with a release date pencilled in for December 2018.

With Alvin already exclusively writing and publishing his ever-popular memoirs on the T&M website, the T&M label booked Alvin into a studio for the initial recording sessions in London at the beginning of May 2018.

With the LP going under the title 'Your Disobedient Servant', Alvin's solo debut has an artist title of ALVIN GIBBS & THE DISOBEDIENT SERVANTS, with the first three days of recording being declared a fabulous success with T&M having already heard some rough mixes which bode extremely well for the final release...

Alvin intends getting in some surprise guest musicians to augment his singing as well as his guitar and bass playing, but the initial recording sessions have been completed with Steve Crittall at Steve's own studio: Racknophobia Studios in Soho. (Steve pictured left - click to enlarge)

Steve recently played guitar on the Subs re-recording of Hey Santa Claus! for a Cleopatra Records' Xmas Compilation back in 2015, but is also guitarist with the reformed Godfathers, their last album ('A Big Bad Beautiful Noise') being produced and mixed at Steve's studio (http://www.sohorecordingservices.com/).

Steve recently posted a picture of Alvin in his studio on his Facebook page which you can see above (click to enlarge)...

...and T&M spoke to Steve for our first update:

"Day 1 was Alvin laying down guide guitar tracks, and we've just finished the first three days at my Racknophobia Studios in Soho working up basic templates and guide tracks for six songs on Alvin's forthcoming solo opus.
Despite the scant amount of time invested so far, we can already tell that we've got something of a monster album on our hands. Very early days yet but we're both very excited with the results so far and can't wait to press on with the next episode. Watch this space!!"

Above: Steve in action - click images to enlarge...
Below: Exclusive photo of Alvin in the studio for T&M thanks to Steve - click to enlarge...

Steve's song writing pedigree for The Godfathers is impressive, he co-wrote seven of the songs with Peter Coyne for the last album and you may recognise the guitar that Alvin is playing in this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXU217liwhI

T&M will be supplying all the latest news and updates regarding this exciting project - Update number 2 will follow asap...

29/04: T&M RECORDS SIGN ALVIN GIBBS FOR SOLO LP

Time & Matter Records are absolutely thrilled to announce that they have signed up U.K. Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs to release his debut solo album, with a release date pencilled in for November or December 2018.

With Alvin already exclusively writing and publishing his ever-popular memoirs on the T&M website, the T&M label have straight-away booked Alvin into a studio for some initial recording sessions in London at the beginning, as well as at the end of May 2018.

Ostensibly a ‘solo album’, however, because Alvin intends on getting in some surprise guest musicians to augment his singing as well as his guitar and bass playing, the project will be released under the artist title

ALVIN GIBBS & THE DISOBEDIENT SERVANTS.

With recording at Steve Crittall’s (Soho Steve) recording studio due to commence next week, Alvin enthusiastically spoke to T&M about his forthcoming debut album:

“Well I think I've written some tasty tunes for my T&M solo album. I’ve got 12 songs now, mostly in the style of ‘Sidewalk Baby’ (from the T&M Urban Dogs LP ‘Attack’), certainly it’s more Urban Dogs than Subs.
I even have a song that I sing in French called ‘Mes Années de Libération’ which translates as ‘My Years of Liberation’, it being a kind of retrospective of my years playing Punk rock music. Really looking forward to getting into it at Steve's studio in Soho and bringing these songs to fruition…”

Other song titles from the solo album to act as a teaser are ‘The Camden Town Gigolo’, ‘Clumsy Fingers’, ‘Dumb’, ‘Ghost Train’ and ‘I'm Not Crying Now’.

T&M have also asked Alvin to write a studio diary for this hugely exciting project, which will be published on the website, with the current working LP title being ‘Your Disobedient Servant’.

T&M will carry regular progress reports, although we won’t yet reveal artwork or guest musician details, however, we can confirm that the album will initially be released as a coloured vinyl LP, with a CD of the album included.

10. HOBOS LULLABY
11. GOING TO THE ZOO

The set comprises 3 Harper originals, 5 traditional songs arranged by Charlie, 2 cover version songs as well as 4 songs written by legendary American singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie.

The album was recorded and mixed over 5 days in September 2017 at The Brighton Road Recording Studios at Newtimber in West Sussex and features Charlie playing 6 and 12-string guitar as well as harmonica.

Ali Gavan, who jointly runs the studio played drums and piano and The Ramonas' Victoria Smith played bass. Charlie himself played harmonica on one of the tracks on the recent brilliant Ramonas debut LP, which was also put down at the same studio.

As well Charlie, Vicky and Ali, they were joined in the studio by Attila The Stockbroker on fiddle, who posted a photo (seen to the right) of himself in the studio with Charlie on 25 September 2017, on his Facebook page.

The CD is a limited run of 500 copies and the LP is due in the next few months on yellow vinyl, which will be limited to 300 copies. T&M will again be distributing this via our mail order shop.

The album title 'Little Black Crow', is taken from one of the acoustic songs Charlie recorded for the bonus disc of the U.K. Subs 2013 'XXIV' CD release. Charlie produced the new album himself and the artwork was done by Jack Hamilton, who also did the art on The Ramonas' aforementioned release.

Talking exclusively to T&M, Charlie described the album as "...a children's album adults will love..." and is hoping to record a follow up solo album later this year, time permitting. Of his newly written songs Charlie revealed that "'Spokane Special' is a country blues, harmonica fuelled song in the style of Sonny Terry, Spokane being a city in the state of Washington in the northwestern USA which was a sort of crossroads for Hobos..."

Charlie's other new song, called 'Inspiration', was actually initiated via Charlie and Alvin trying to write a chanson, or French style story song which Charlie developed the chord sequence from subsequently.

Charlie also enthused about his serendipitous version of 'True Love Will Find You', a song which he had never heard of by Daniel Johnston, before "...someone said to Jamie at a Subs gig 'has Charlie recorded that song by Daniel Johnston', which led me to look it up, listen to it and actually love it and now record it..."

U.K. Subs four-stringer Mr Alvin Gibbs now has his own custom range of bass strings through the Skull Strings company in France.

Illustrating this news story is one of the new pack covers.

Alvin has commented that:

"...living in France, it’s gratifying to me for have an association with a French company, especially one that has embraced and offered such generous deals to other musicians from within the Punk Rock fraternity. They sound and play great, and I’m very much looking forward to thrashing out my basslines on these suckers on the U.K. Subs’ forthcoming UK Spring tour..."

Our Small Part in the Fall of
General Jaruzelski and the Soviet empire...

T&M today proudly publishes the 25th instalment of this suberb series of memoirs from Alvin Gibbs about his life and U.K. Subs-experiences...

As usual, the latest episode boasts many previously unpublished photos from Alvin's personal archive...

Read the latest...

In which - after the Subs' long tour of the USA concludes - Alvin ponders the circumstances on which the U.K. Subs were chosen in 1983 to tour behind the Iron Curtain ahead of the communist-considered violent Village People, Alice Cooper's vandalism, the neo-fascism of Julio Iglesias, the racism of Judas Priest or the sex of Tina Turner?
Prior to Poland there's a brief stay at his new pad in London betwixt these 'extreme' tours, in which the latter sees the Subs playing 'Inflammable Material' off-stage!

04/03: INTRODUCING... THE UKULELE SUBS!

As this new band's Facebook page states:
"Ukulele covers of U.K. Subs songs. What did you expect?"

It was Neil Keenan, in 2017, who finally got a project together that he'd wanted to do for ages.

"It's a combination of two of my favourite things, namely the U.K. Subs and playing the ukulele. I started rehearsing with an old friend and fellow Subs fan Dave Fanning - who it turns out was taught bass at a youth club by Paul Slack! - and the Ukulele Subs were born. We added Satu Salonpaa on percussion and backing vocals and played our first gig at Bearded Theory's Spring Gathering 2017. We're back there again this year and, to our delight, the U.K. Subs themselves are also playing."

The band recently played a show at Knox's Rock N Roll Rescue charity shop in London on February 18, going down a storm, of which you can view some footage below...

Currently the band have the following Subs classic tracks in their set: B.1.C. (JB.1.C.), C.I.D., Emotional Blackmail, I Couldn't Be You, I'm Waiting For My Man, Keep on Running (Til You Burn), Killer, Left for Dead, Live in a Car, Party in Paris, Scum of the Earth, She's Not There, Stranglehold, Teenage, Telephone Numbers, Tomorrow's Girls, Victim, Warhead and World War.

01/01: HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM T&M

From 2018, T&M has decided that more instantaneous, and up-to-date Subs news is more easily obtainable from the official U.K. Subs page on Facebook as well as the U.K. Subs Fan Club on Facebook, both of which T&M set up.

Unfortunately, websites such as this one are now playing second-fiddle to social media giants such as Facebook, and people tend to go to those sites first whilst surfing the 'net. Time & Matter will continue to document and archive U.K. Subs news stories, but with less regularity than before.
However, our U.K. Subs Tour Dates page will remain the most up-to-date 'go-to' webpage on the internet for the Subs faithful to see where the band are playing.
Please, however, still contact us if you have any news relating to any ex-member of the Subs and we will run it.

   EXCLUSIVE T&M INTERVIEW

with the original U.K. Subs drummer

    ROB HARPER

T&M is today (31 October 2017) extremely proud to publish an exclusive interview with Rob Harper.
With the 40th anniversary of the U.K. Subs having occurred a few months back in the summer of 2017 - see the advert below - original Subs sticksman Rob Harper holds a fascinating place in the early history of the Punk rock scene, as a key original member of the U.K. Subs in 1977 when they changed their name from the Marauders, via The Subs and eventually to U.K. Subs around the summer of that year, having played on the band's first ever demo (more on this link), and of course, prior to this he was an early drummer for Punk legends The Clash, occupying their hot-seat from December 1976 until January 1977, or, to further highlight his Punk rock credentials, Rob was there with The Clash and the Sex Pistols during their legendary and infamous 'Anarchy Tour', much publicised at the time and much mythologised since due to the furore surrounding this tour to end all tours!
Time & Matter editor Mark Chadderton interviews Rob at length and in detail about his extraordinary experiences both with The Clash, other legendary musicians, the U.K. Subs as well as his (unfortunately) long forgotten brilliant Power-Pop band the Dazzlers, which also included ex-original U.K. Subs bassist Steve Slack!

U.K. Subs in 1978 BBC Documentary Clip Appears Online

The 'BBC Archive' on Twitter (@BBCArchive') recently (12 October 2017) posted a fascinating clip lasting 9 minutes and 44 seconds, from the 1978 BBC Omnibus programme documentary entitled 'The Record Machine', with the tweet information reading:

"#OTD 1978: The Mekons, Sham 69, ATV, The Slits and the UK Subs discussed the complex relationship between punk, publicity and profit".

Featuring John Peel interviewing the various bands, the clip includes a headline quote from Charlie Harper as follows:

"We done a gig for fourteen pound - and we lost two quid"

The clip was edited together from different sections of the original documentary, with the Subs appearing at 7.58 until the end of the clip... which you can watch below:

In which our narrator can only get work as a virtually unpaid Dog, cannot prevent the sad departure of Chutch, breaks records at CBGB's , witnesses Harper's abhorrence of furniture fag-burns at Elvis' abode, nearly talks himself into a drive-by shooting a la Easy Rider, increasingly questions the ambitions of the Subs American management and the map reading 'skills' of tour arrangers, enjoys downtime with the in-laws and takes a (very) short cab-ride and parties with Billy Idol and Arturo Vega...

Alvin Gibbs Revamped Iggy Pop Book Out Now

Subs bassist Alvin Gibbs has just had his brilliant book on his time touring as part of the Iggy Pop band re-published in an expanded and updated form. Also retitled from the original 'Neighbourhood Threat' to 'Some Weird Sin', Alvin put out the following information via his Facebook page on 24 July:

"For those who have been following my regular scribblings for the uksubstimeandmatter.net website entitled ‘Diminished Responsibility: My Life as a UK Subs, and Other Strange Stories’, I’m aware it has been awhile since I’ve provided you all with an additional memoir episode. The reason for this is that I’ve been intensely immersed in another writing project that has finally come to fruition.

As of today you can purchase a new edition of the book first published in 1996 detailing my extraordinary experiences as the bass player to Iggy Pop on an eight-month world tour taking in pretty much every major city, along with some less renowned locations, across six continents.

Having realised it was almost thirty years since that tour commenced at the Whisky a-go-go in Los Angeles in 1988 and with the two original issues being out of print for some years now, I thought it was time for an updated version of the book with some fresh stories and information that I was unable to include in the previous two English editions, plus added photos, a renovation of some of the writing and the addition of a revised Intro chapter and an up-to-date Outro section detailing what all the main players on the tour have been doing since its conclusion in February 1989 up to the present day.

To signify these changes I’ve also retitled it ‘Some Weird Sin: On Tour with Iggy Pop’ (formally ‘Neighbourhood Threat’) this being, I believe, a more appropriate title for the candid new content in addition to the original designation only having been a working title that nonetheless continued to be utilised on both prior English releases, plus the French language version distributed by Camion Blanc in 2010. This latest version is brought to you via a joint publishing venture between Vive le Rock magazine’s book division, Extradition Books, and Cadiz Music Publishing. It is priced at a reasonable £15 – some former editions were selling for as much as £60 on a well-known auction site! – and is available now to order on the Extradition Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Etraditionbooks/

I will also be signing copies of ‘Some Weird Sin’ at the Vive le Rock stall at the Rebellion Festival next month. So, why not treat yourselves to a copy and discover what is was truly like to be a band member touring the globe with one of the most incendiary and rousing exponents of the rock music genre – the godfather of Punk, Iggy Pop. I promise you, it was a wild, wild ride. A x "

T&M and U.K. Subs hand over £4,000 cheque to RNLI

Click to enlargeAt the U.K. Subs' gig at the 'Talking Heads' music venue in Southampton on Friday 19 May, Time & Matter Recordings and the U.K. Subs made their latest donation to the RNLI, which is Charlie Harper's favourite charity.

The T&M cheque, representing total donations of £4,000 raised since May 2014 via Time & Matter's charity releases, e-Bay auctions as well as Yuko's collections via the band's merchandise desk was handed over to Jez Cronin, the RNLIs Legacy &
In Memory Team Co-Ordinator, who is based at the RNLI headquarters in Poole, Dorset.

Time & Matter previously donated £2,000 to the RNLI in April 2014, and you can read that previous news story here.

Jez - who is a massive music fan, has been into punk since 1976, and continues to follow the punk scene and attend all sorts of gigs, of which he has seen the Subs many times - told the T&M website more about his role and what these donations mean for the RNLI:

"My role working as the Legacy & In Memorium Co-Ordinator for the RNLI is dealing with enquiries and offering support to our supporters wishing to leave legacies to the RNLI. These gifts in Wills can vary from cash donations, Residuary of Estates and even specific items being donated to the RNLI. The RNLI has been left gifts as diverse as a Pig Farm, gold teeth and last year two rare Ferraris from the 1960s which raised £8.5 million for the RNLI via auction.

As over 60% of the RNLIs income comes from legacies I really appreciate how generous and unbelievable our supporters are and how important legacies are for the future of the RNLI.

All donations are important, so it was really nice to be able to 'let my hair down' and also enjoy an evening with my favourite punk band the U.K. Subs and at the same time collect a fantastic donation of £4,000 from Charlie and the band in person. The fundraising efforts both financially and personally they have made with Rob and Mark from Time & Matter for the RNLI really is something I cannot thank them enough for on behalf of the RNLI. Of course, the other incredibly important factor to consider is that with Yuko's merchandise desk always having our RNLI Lifeboat donation box on it amongst the Subs merch, and it being carried round so many venues in the UK with the band, this also helps raise awareness of the RNLI.

I was amazed and honoured to personally thank Charlie, Yuko and the band at Talking Heads in Southampton in 2014 for raising over £3,000 for the RNLI at that point in time. So to be able to meet and thank the band again in 2017 at the new Talking Heads venue for this new, latest donation was unbelievable. The efforts Mark, Rob and the U.K. Subs have made over the years for the RNLI is truly humbling.

Then to top it off, after thanking Charlie and the band for their donation, I of course got to see another fantastic gig by the Subs in Mark's company. I know Mark will have passed on my thanks to his fellow T&Mer Rob who was not at the gig and like all of you reading this, I'm once again looking forward to spending many more evenings enjoying the U.K. Subs live and can’t wait for the next gig..."

FOUR LUMINARIES OF THE PUNK AND ALTERNATIVE SCENE RE-UNITE FOR A BRAND NEW KILLER LP!

Charlie Harper (U.K. Subs)
Knox (The Vibrators)
Alvin Gibbs (U.K. Subs)
Matthew Best (Psychic TV)

Recorded at ex-Vibrators’ bassist Pat Collier’s London Studio in May 2016, this fi fth Urban Dogs album really is their best yet, featuring a stunning collection of songs that are breathtaking in their variety, both musically and lyrically.

Selected highlights are Charlie’s harmonica-drenched ‘Pawn Shop Special’ and bittersweet ‘Whisky Song’, Knox’s fascinating songwriting skills, encompassing ageing love, crucifi xion and android analogy, two stunning covers; their take on The Monkees and Sex Pistols’ famous cover song ‘Steppin’ Stone’ and Johnny Thunders’ classic ‘You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory’ as well as Alvin’s best ever song yet, the simply sensational punk raucous sweaty-sweet stomper that is ‘Sidewalk Baby’.

All that and we haven’t even barked on about the Knox sung Gibbs homage to Vivienne Westwood - ‘World’s End Apocalypso’ or Alvin’s perfect politician put-down ‘Goddamn Liar’!

Yet more genius to chew on! Click to enlarge

    HOMEPAGE PICTURE CHOICE NUMBER 31

U.K. SUBS IN 1977

It's amazing what can turn up after so many years!
Early U.K. Subs drummer Steve J. Jones - who later returned to play on 1983s 'Flood of Lies' LP - sent in this amazing, previously unpublished photo of the Subs, just after Nicky Garratt had joined in early October 1977.

Steve had this to say about this stunning find!

"Here's a picture of the UK Subs from 1977 - playing the Western Counties pub in Paddington. Not sure if it's been published before. I've had a copy in my scrapbook since '77. I'm sure it was one of the first we played after Nicky Garratt joined. We played that particular pub a number of times - often with Rob Harper also in the band. I'm not sure if Rob is with us on this occasion and simply missing from the shot. I've no idea who took the picture..."

T&M contacted Nicky Garratt about the photo and he confirmed for us that the photo was taken on his "...first weekend with the Subs..."

Charlie Harper, 17 December 1998 - quoted from an interview in Scanner Fanzine Issue 3

"Among the many bands on the bill are some of the veterans of the punk/new wave explosion of the late 1970s including... ...the seemingly indestructible UK Subs. Still fronted by Charlie Harper, who first formed the band as an Elizabethan madrigal quartet sometime in the 1600s, UK Subs were one of the original punk bands from 1976 and are notable not least for the fact of having been through at least 35 drummers in their 35-year history."
